CAA Softball Weekly Awards – May 6

RICHMOND, Va. (May 6, 2024) – The CAA has announced its final softball weekly awards for the 2024 season. All three honorees hail from North Carolina, where the 2024 CAA Softball Championship will be later this week. Elon sophomore outfielder Mauri Murray was named CAA Player of the Week, and Campbell redshirt junior Isabella Smith earned her fourth CAA Pitcher of the Week honor this year. In addition, UNCW freshman outfield Cassidy Relay was tabbed as the CAA Rookie of the Week for the second time this spring.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Mauri Murray, Elon
Sophomore | Outfield | Marvin, N.C. / Marvin Ridge
Murray slashed .700/.727/1.200 with six RBIs and six runs scored, leading Elon to a weekend sweep over Drexel. The sophomore outfielder recorded at least one hit, one RBI and two runs scored in all three games in Elon’s final CAA series. In addition, Murray notched two multi-hit efforts and drove in multiple runs in two games. In the series opener, she went 4-for-4 – a career-high for hits – with a triple, three RBIs and two runs scored. In game two, Murray went 1-for-3 with a homer and walk, scoring two runs and driving in a pair before a 2-for-3 effort in the series finale with two runs scored and one RBI.
PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Isabella Smith, Campbell
R-Junior | Raleigh, N.C. / St. David’s School
Smith went 2-0 in the circle with a save, leading Campbell to a weekend sweep of Delaware and the CAA Regular Season title. The right-hander started all three games and re-entered to secure the final two outs in the series finale, totaling 17.2 innings. Smith posted a 0.40 ERA with 18 strikeouts, scattering just six hits and limiting the opposition to a .103 batting average. The redshirt junior tossed a one-hit complete game with seven punchouts in the series opener before a two-hit shutout with eight Ks in game two. She started game three before slamming the door shut to give Campbell its first CAA Regular Season title in any sport.
ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Cassidy Relay, UNCW
Freshman | Outfield | Colts Neck, N.J. / Colts Neck
Relay batted .333 and scored one run, helping UNCW to a weekend sweep over Monmouth in their final CAA series. The freshman hit safely in two games, including her 10
th multi-hit effort this season. In addition, she was also perfect in the field, recording a 1.000 fielding percentage with three putouts and one assist in four chances. In the series opener, Relay went 2-for-3 with one run scored and plated one in her first at-bat after an error by the Hawks. She followed the effort by going 1-for-3 in the season finale.
