WASHINGTON (May 9, 2024) – Stony Brook women’s lacrosse senior Ellie Masera was selected as one of five 2024 finalists for The Tewaaraton Award, the Tewaaraton Foundation announced Thursday afternoon.

Masera is the fourth Tewaaraton finalist in CAA history, joining three James Madison honorees: Kristen Gaudian (2018), Gail Decker (2004), and Lisa Staedt (2003). She collects Stony Brook’s third finalist honor, as Kylie Ohlmiller was a two-time finalist in 2017 and 2018.

Masera is having a senior season for the ages. She was named the CAA Midfielder of the Year for the second season in a row and was selected as the CAA Tournament Most Outstanding performer following the Seawolves’ 9-6 championship victory over Drexel.

Masera has recorded 104 points (69 goals, 35 assists) and 136 draw controls in 17 games this season. The CAA Midfielder of the Year ranks ninth in the nation in draw controls per game (8.0), ninth in goals (69), sixth in goals per game (4.1), first in points (104), second in points per game (6.1), first in shots per game (10.3), and first in shots on goal per game (7.4). She leads the CAA in goals, goals per game, points, points per game, shots, and shots per game.

Earlier this season, she netted her 200th career goal in a win over Rutgers on April 9, and became just the sixth player in program history to reach 200 career goals. Masera was also named the USA Lacrosse DI Player of the Week (Feb. 27) and IWLCA DI National Offensive Player of the Week (Feb. 27) and took home four CAA Player of the Week honors (Feb. 26, March 4, April 15, April 22).

In the CAA Tournament semifinal win over Elon, Masera eclipsed 300 points in her career and 100 points this season. She is just the fifth player in program history to record over 300 points in their career and the sixth player to register 100 points or more in a single season. Her 104 points entering Friday’s NCAA First Round game are eight shy of the CAA single-season mark set by Decker in her Tewaaraton finalist season in 2004.

No. 14 Stony Brook opens NCAA Tournament play on Friday at 2 p.m. when the Seawolves face Niagara at the Syracuse Soccer Stadium. The game can be seen on ESPN+.
