CAA PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Chandler Cuthrell, Elon
Graduate Student | Forward | Baltimore, Md.
Cuthrell averaged 28.5 points per game on 51.2% shooting (21-of-41) and 6.5 rebounds per game during Elon's 1-1 week. The Baltimore, Md., native poured in a career-high 28 points in a narrow 96-89 road loss at Marshall last week, leading all Phoenix scorers in the contest. The graduate forward broke his personal benchmark once again with a career-high 29 points on 10-of-18 shooting to go with eight boards in a 95-84 victory over Gardner-Webb on Saturday. The Phoenix forward also ranks sixth nationally in scoring at 24.5 points per game.
 
CAA ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Preston Edmead, Hofstra
Freshman | Guard | Deer Park, N.Y.
Edmead helped the Pride to a 2-0 week as the freshman guard averaged 17.5 points, 5.5 assists and 2.0 steals per game in the wins over Molloy and Bucknell. Against Molloy, he had 12 points, six assists, and two steals in limited minutes (28). Edmead would follow that up with his first career 20-point game, notching 23 points, five assists and two steals in an 83-77 road win over the Bison. Edmead’s 18 second-half points led the Pride's comeback from down double digits. The Deer Park, N.Y., native became the first Hofstra true freshman to score 20 or more points in a game since Eli Pemberton on January 19, 2017, and he is one of only five freshmen nationally to be averaging at least 17 points and five assists per game. For the week, he hit six three-pointers as well and shot 11-for-14 from the free throw line, while starting both games and averaging 33 minutes per game.
 
LOAD UP
Charleston will welcome Drake to TD Arena on Monday night. Tip-off on FloCollege is slated for 7 p.m. Tonight’s matchup marks the first meeting between the two programs.
 
Hampton and Monmouth will look to topple ACC foes on Tuesday. The Pirates remain in Massachusetts to face Boston College in a 7 p.m. tilt, while the Hawks will look to take down Syracuse in a 9 p.m. showdown. Both contests will air on ACCNX. Towson will also square off with a former conference foe on Tuesday as it battles Sun Belt favorite James Madison on Tuesday.
 
Elon will also face an ACC opponent this week, looking to take down Miami [FL] in a 7 p.m. contest on ACCNX.
 
Hampton will try and keep the CAA’s undefeated record (2-0) intact when it takes on MEAC Champion Norfolk State on Friday at 8 p.m. Campbell will look to topple WAC preseason runner-up UT Arlington on Friday in a 3 p.m. tilt on ESPN+.
 
Charleston heads to Paradise Jam this weekend, looking to take care of business on Friday when it faces UMass in the opening round. The Cougars will face either Green Bay or Yale the following day.
 
WEEKEND WHISTLE
CAA Teams picked up six wins over the weekend, including a 4-0 evening on Friday.
 
UNCW picked up a 73-60 win over USC Upstate on Saturday night. Madison Durr scored eight of his game-high 16 points from the charity stripe. Nolan Hodge notched 14 points and seven boards in the winning effort, while Greedy Williams rattled off 11 points, six rebounds and a pair of blocks. The Seahawks held the Spartans to just 26 points in the opening frame.
 
Elon showed out with a 95-84 victory over Gardner-Webb behind a pair of 20-point efforts from Chandler Cuthrell and Randall Pettus II. Cuthrell unloaded 29 points on 10-of-18 shooting with a trio of 3-pointers and eight rebounds. Pettus rattled off 21 points as the team’s only other player in double figures, knocking down five of his seven makes from distance.
 
All four teams in action on Friday night pulled out the victory. Charleston opened the night with an 88-61 win over South Carolina State. Of the five players in double figures, Chris Davis Jr., Martin Kalu and Chol Machot all notched 12 points apiece.
 
Towson grinded out a 51-41 victory over reigning MEAC Champion Norfolk State. Dylan Williamson led all scorers with 12 points, while Jack Doumbia Jr. notched a 10-point, 10-rebound double-double.
 
Freshman Preston Edmead helped Hofstra to an 83-77 win at Bucknell after rattling off 23 points and five assists. Cruz Davis and Biggie Patterson logged 18 and 17 points each, respectively, while Victory Onuetu registered 11 points and 12 rebounds in the win.
 
Hampton closed out the night with an eventful 72-63 win over Brown. Michael Eley paced the Pirates with 18 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the floor and a 5-for-5 showing at the charity stripe. Daniel Johnson also produced 17 points and a game-high four steals.
 
CAMPBELL CAMELS (2-2; 0-0 CAA)
  • D.J. Smith led Campbell to a 108-55 win over Mid-Atlantic Christian with 27 points on 6-of-11 shooting from the floor and a 12-for-12 showing at the charity stripe. Dovydas Butka also notched a 12-point, 16-rebound double-double.
  • Smith has been among the league’s top 3-point shooters through the early-going, sitting in a tie for the CAA lead with 3.5 treys per contest.
 
CHARLESTON COUGARS (2-2; 0-0 CAA)
  • Charleston picked up an 88-61 win over South Carolina State on Friday. Of the five players in double figures, Chris Davis Jr., Martin Kalu and Chol Machot all notched 12 points apiece.
  •  The Cougars have produced a positive assist/turnover ratio in all five contests this season, turning in a 1.8 margin that sits second in the league and 37th in the nation.
 
DREXEL DRAGONS (1-3; 0-0 CAA)
  • Drexel nearly erased a 19-point halftime deficit against Colgate on Tuesday, seeing 24-point efforts from Shane Blakeney and Eli Beard almost will the Dragons back in the 90-83 setback in Hamilton, N.Y. Drexel also hung around with ACC foe Syracuse before falling, 80-50. Beard registered 13 points in the setback.
  • Beard and Blakeney are currently tied for the team lead in scoring, both averaging 12.5 points per game. Ralph Akuta is tied for the CAA lead with 2.7 blocks per contest.
     
ELON PHOENIX (3-1; 0-0 CAA)
  • Elon cruised to a 95-84 win over Gardner-Webb on Saturday. Chandler Cuthrell unloaded 29 points on 10-of-18 shooting with a trio of 3-pointers and eight rebounds. Randall Pettus II notched 21 points, knocking down five of his seven makes from distance.
  • Cuthrell paces the CAA and ranks sixth in the nation with 24.5 ppg. He is also one of seven players in the league to shoot 50% or better from the field, knocking down 51.6% of his shots from the floor.
     
HAMPTON PIRATES (2-3; 0-0 CAA)
  • Hampton split its weekend slate, starting with a 72-63 win over Brown. Michael Eley paced the Pirates with 18 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the floor and a 5-for-5 showing at the charity stripe. Daniel Johnson also produced 17 points and a game-high four steals. The Pirates fell to Holy Cross, 67-61, on Sunday, despite a 21-point, 13-board outing from Xzavier Long.
  • Long has been lethal on the glass through five contests, averaging 12.3 rebounds (9th in NCAA) to go along with 12.3 points per game.
 
HOFSTRA PRIDE (2-2; 0-0 CAA)
  • Freshman Preston Edmead helped Hofstra to an 83-77 win at Bucknell after rattling off 23 points and five assists. Cruz Davis and Biggie Patterson logged 18 and 17 points each, respectively, while Victory Onuetu registered 11 points and 12 rebounds in the win.
  • Edmead is one of eight freshmen nationally to log over 5.5 assists per game, sitting in seventh at 5.8 helpers.
 
MONMOUTH HAWKS (1-2; 0-0 CAA)
  • Monmouth is second in the nation with 8.3 blocks per contest. Jason Rivera-Torres (8), Andrew Ball (5) and Dok Muordar (5) are three of seven CAA players with five or more total stuffs through the early going.
  • The Hawks nearly knocked off unbeaten Seton Hall after carrying a seven-point lead at halftime before falling in Newark, N.J., 70-58. Stefanos Spartalis scored nine of his team-high 16 points from the free-throw line.
 
N.C. A&T AGGIES (2-1; 0-0 CAA)
  • Lureon and Lewis Walker were instrumental to the Aggies’ two wins last week, helping A&T to an 89-83 win over Washington Adventist and an 85-62 victory over South Carolina State. The duo combined for over 50% of the team’s scoring as Lureon averaged 23.5 ppg and Lewis notched 20.5 ppg
  • The Walkers have also been knocking down more than half of their respective shots, both sitting top five in the conference. Lureon has knocked down 54.5% of his shots, while Lewis has hit 53.3%.
 
UNCW SEAHAWKS (2-1; 0-0 CAA)
  • UNCW secured a 73-60 win over USC Upstate on Saturday. Madison Durr scored eight of his game-high 16 points from the free-throw line. Nolan Hodge notched 14 points and seven boards, while Greedy Williams rattled off 11 points, six rebounds and a pair of blocks.
  • The Seahawks erased a 22-point deficit to tie the game late in the second half before dropping to Kent State, 86-77. Patrick Wessler notched his second-straight double-double with 17 points and 10 boards, including six on the offensive glass. Nolan Hodge led with a game-high 21 points.
 
NORTHEASTERN HUSKIES (2-2; 0-0 CAA)
  • The Huskies have seen early success from Youri Fritz and Xander Alarie. Fritz paces the CAA and ranks 15th in the nation shooting 73.3% from the floor. Alarie has averaged 11.8 points and 9.0 rebounds per contest to start his collegiate career.
  • Northeastern picked up its second consecutive win over Harvard, 77-60, last week. Alarie notched a 23-point, 11-board double-double, while Fritz also rattled off 13 points and 13 rebounds in the win.
 
STONY BROOK SEAWOLVES (3-1; 0-0 CAA)
  • Erik Pratt has emerged as a steady force for the Seawolves, pacing the team and sitting tied for fourth in the conference with 19.0 ppg.
  • The Seawolves put forth an incredible effort against Ivy League favorite Yale, hanging around with the Bulldogs behind a 22-point showing from Pratt in the 86-79 setback. Collin O’Connor notched 15 points, while Rob Brown III and Tomas Valentiny registered 13 points apiece.
 
TOWSON TIGERS (3-1; 0-0 CAA)
  • Towson grinded out a 51-41 victory over reigning MEAC Champion Norfolk State. Dylan Williamson led all scorers with 12 points, while Jack Doumbia Jr. notched a 10-point, 10-rebound double-double.
  • The Tigers cruised to a 101-62 win over Wilson College after Dylan Williamson led four players with 15+ points, scoring 18 of his own. Jaiden Cole nearly logged a triple-double with 17 points, 10 boards and eight assists.
 
WILLIAM & MARY TRIBE (2-2; 0-0 CAA)
  • William & Mary were battle-tested last week. With its most frequent opponent, Richmond, the Tribe went to war and exchanged seven ties and 12 lead changes before seeing the Spiders come out on top, 90-86. The Tribe also pestered No. 13/13 St. John’s with seven treys in the first half to trail by only five heading into the intermission before falling, 93-60.
  • The Tribe has utilized its entire bench through four games this season, averaging 41.0 points per game from their reserves. W&M is also pacing the CAA with 18.8 assists per contest.
