CAA Men's And Women's Tennis Weekly Awards - Feb. 4

RICHMOND, Va. (February 4, 2025) – UNCW swept the CAA men’s tennis weekly awards after a strong start to its season on a trip to Florida, while William & Mary earned both women’s tennis weekly honors after defeating Big 12 foe West Virginia as part of a 2-0 weekend.
CAA Men’s Tennis Player of the Week
Joseph Wayand, Sr., UNCW (Cary, N.C.)
Wayand posted a 2-0 mark at No. 3 singles as UNCW went 1-1 in a pair of tough season-opening matches in Florida. The senior clinched a 4-3 victory over a FAU team ranked in the top 50 a year ago by rallying past Segundo Goity Zapico, 2-6, 7-5, 6-2. The next day against SEC foe Florida, he pulled out another three-set victory over the Gators’ Henry Jefferson, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 as UNCW was edged, 4-2.
CAA Men’s Tennis Doubles Team of the Week
Harold Huens, Sr., UNCW (Waterloo, Belgium)
Lukas Steffen, Jr., UNCW (Cary, N.C.)
Huens and Steffen opened their season in impressive fashion, going 2-0 at No. 2 doubles as UNCW split matches in Florida last weekend. The duo clinched the critical doubles point in a 4-3 win over FAU, defeating Simon Myslivec and Marek Pazdera, 6-4. They followed by knocking off 76
th-ranked Kevin Edengren and Jeremy Jin of Florida, 6-3, in a 4-2 team setback to the Gators.
CAA Women’s Tennis Player of the Week
Hedda Gurholt, Sr., William & Mary (Oslo, Norway)
The two-time CAA Player of the Year got her spring season off to a strong start, going 2-0 at No. 1 singles in team wins over Norfolk State (6-1) and West Virginia (5-2). The senior battled past NSU’s Caroline Nicholls, 3-6, 7-5, 1-0 (6) last Saturday before downing WVU’s Mille Haagensen, 6-2, 6-2 on Sunday. The victory was the 80
th of Gurholt’s career as the Tribe beat a power conference opponent for the first time since 2020.
CAA Women’s Tennis Double Team of the Week
Alessandra Anghel, Sr. William & Mary (Pistoia, Florence, Italy)
Francesca Davis, So., William & Mary (Glastonbury, Somerset, England)
Anghel and Davis rolled to a 2-0 mark at No. 2 doubles as William & Mary secured the doubles point in team wins over Norfolk State (6-1) and Big 12 foe West Virginia (5-2). The Tribe tandem beat NSU’s Caroline Nicholls and Sara Sofia Gonzalez, 6-2, and cruised past WVU’s Julie Bousseau and Maja Dodik, 6-1. Anghel and Davis improved to 4-1 on the season.
