NEWS AND NOTES

Overtime Thriller

Campbell wheeled away in overtime to defeat UNCW 67-61. Down 10 to start the fourth quarter, UNCW mounted a 15-9 run with 16 seconds left on the clock. After Rori Cox drilled a free throw, Campbell was forced into a five-second violation, giving the Seahawks an opportunity to tie the game. Cox saw her name called on once again, knocking down a 3-pointer with three seconds remaining to knot it at 53.  Entering overtime, Campbell retook momentum. Both teams traded buckets to deadlock the game at 58, but Hadleigh Dill was clutch. After a Jasmine Felton layup, Dill knocked down a trey from the corner to give the Camels a 63-58 lead that UNCW never overcame through free throws.

Sjökvist Game Winner

Tilda Sjökvist had the final say as Towson earned a 58-55 victory over Hofstra. With the score knotted at 55 with seconds to play, Sjökvist drilled a corner three to steal the lead with a second on the clock. Trailing by five with less than two minutes, the Tigers jump-started an 8-0 run. Towson’s leading scorer on the day, India Johnston (24 points), knocked down two free throws and the game-tying bucket. Receiving the ball with the shot clock turned off, Semaya Turner poked it loose from Hofstra’s Ema Karim to give Towson the final shot. Zoli Khalil quickly zipped the ball to the corner with a second remaining to Sjökvist, who drained the trey to end her team’s two-game skid.

Dominate Defense from the Dragons

Drexel held both Stony Brook and Towson to under 45 points, earning two straight wins. With a 49-41 result over the Seawolves, the Dragons started their 10-0 run 21 seconds into the game. Stony Brook could not tie or take the lead for the rest of the game. Then, less than 24 hours later, Drexel retook the court to defeat the Tigers 68-45. marking the largest victory against Towson since the team was victorious in 2019, 77-44. The Dragons grabbed 48 rebounds, which is a team-high against Division I opponents this season.

Cougars Come Up Big

With a 71-37 for Charleston over UNCW, the Cougars tied for the 11th-fewest points allowed in a game in program history. It’s also the fewest points the Cougars have allowed this season. Robin Harmony’s team allowed just two points in the second quarter, the fewest points the Cougars have ever allowed to a D1 opponent in a quarter. It’s also tied for the second-least points allowed in a quarter in program history.

What a Week for Rori Cox

Rori Cox paced the Seahawks once again this week, including a 29-point performance in an overtime loss to Campbell. Cox’s 29 points eclipsed her previous high of 26 set last season at Virginia Union. Her tally was also the highest by a Seahawk since 2015 when Brie Mobley had a program-record 46 against Delaware (Feb. 26, 2015).
