NEWS AND NOTES
Week 1 Down, Plenty More to Come
Three teams were perfect in the opening weekend of CAA play, with Monmouth and Charleston going 2-0, while Towson picked up a 57-54 win over Campbell in its lone matchup. Seven other programs capped off their first weekends with a win, including Stony Brook, which defeated William & Mary in one of the most thrilling games of the week.
OVERTIME THRILLER
Deadlocked after 40 minutes, Stony Brook ran away in overtime to defeat William & Mary 73-57. Coming out of the final media timeout, both teams traded buckets. Cassidy Geddes tied up the game at 54 with 10 seconds to go, ultimately sending the game to overtime. However, Stony Brook wasn’t fazed, with Janay Brantley opening the scoring with a free throw before Diaka Berete dropped 10 points to outscore the Tribe 19-3. With 10 of her 24 points coming in the final five minutes, Berete finished as the Seawolves’ leading scorer, while Geddes had a team-high 21 points for the Tribe.
Gigi Gamble Going for Gold
Gigi Gamble, what’s more to say? The junior guard had one of the most impressive three-game stretches across the conference this past week, establishing herself as a top scorer in the CAA. Gamble kick-started her week with 27 points against Georgian Court before dropping a career-best 30 in the win over Elon. Knocking down a personal-best six triples, she continued the hot form into Sunday with a game-high 25 in the win over N.C. A&T. Gamble averaged the most points amongst all CAA student-athletes with 28.5 in her first two games.
Barbot and Beans Balled Out
Charleston’s Taryn Barbot and Tyja Beans had themselves an afternoon against Northeastern, accounting for 52 of the Cougars 85 points in the win. “I’m happy we got the win today, and I’m proud of our kids,” said Head Coach Robin Harmony. “It was great to see Beans and Taryn play with a lot of confidence today. We’ve done a good job getting to 2-0, and we’ll take a look at film and clean some things up before heading to William & Mary and Hampton next weekend.” It was business as usual for Barbot, eclipsing the 20-point mark for the seventh time this year. For Bean, she set career highs in points (23) and steals (8). Her eight steals are tied for the most in a game in the D1 era. Beans also added three rebounds and three steals.
Defensive Masterclass
Hofstra earned its third win of the season and first of conference play with a 54-46 result over UNCW. The Seahawks’ point tally was the fewest for the Pride against a Division I opponent this season, and lowest since holding William & Mary to 34 on March 2, 2025. The Pride held Marywood to 44 points on December 9, 2025.
