CAA CO-PLAYER OF THE WEEK
DJ Smith, Campbell
Graduate Student | Guard | North Little Rock, Ark.
Smith logged career highs in both scoring and rebounds in a 1-1 week for the Camels. The North Little Rock, Ark., native averaged a team-best 29.5 ppg and 6.5 rpg this week, shooting 48.5% from the floor and 39.1% from distance. The week started with Smith recording second career double-double, posting 20 points and 10 rebounds to match a career high on the glass against Stony Brook. The graduate guard led the Camels in scoring, rebounding, and assists (3) against the Seawolves. His encore performance saw him register a career-high 39 points in a road win at William & Mary, handing the Tribe their first home loss of the season. Smith had 25 points in the first half as Campbell, becoming just the eighth CAA player since the 2016-17 season to log 25 or more points in the opening frame. Smith also became just the third Camel in the program's NCAA Division I history to score at least 39 points in a game.
CAA CO-PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Jlynn Counter, Charleston
Graduate Student | Guard | Oklahoma City, Okla.
Counter averaged 25.0 ppg, 6.5 rpg and 8.0 apg in the Cougars’ 2-0 week. The graduate guard posted back-to-back double-doubles, starting with 22 points, 10 rebounds and five assists in a 66-64 road win over Hofstra, including 20 of his points coming in the second half. Counter followed up with 28 points, a career-high 11 assists, and three rebounds in an 89-84 victory at Northeastern. The Oklahoma City, Okla., native’s 11 assists were tied for third-most in a single game in program history. Charleston ended the game with the Huskies on a 13-2 run, with all 13 points belonging to Counter to seal the victory.
CAA ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Andrej Shoshkikj, Stony Brook
Freshman | Guard | Skopje, North Macedonia
Shoshkikj paced the Seawolves with 18.0 ppg in two road wins at Campbell and Elon last week. The Stony Brook freshman extended his double-digit scoring streak to five straight games after his stellar shooting performance, going 11-for-20 (55.0%) from the field, 6-for-9 (66.7%) from behind the arc and 8-for-8 (100%) from the line. He also averaged 6.0 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 2.0 steals per game. Shoshkikj opened the week with a 19-point, five-assist showing in an 81-69 win at Campbell, who suffered just its second loss at home. The Skopje, North Macedonia native followed up with a complete effort after rattling off 17 points, eight boards and four assists in 39 minutes of action.
THURSDAY NIGHT HOOPS
William & Mary will head to UNCW for a 7 p.m. showdown on CBS Sports Network. The Tribe is the lone CAA team to take down the Seahawks this season, earning a 77-70 victory thanks to a 16-point, six-rebound effort from Kyle Pulliam. UNCW has won four of the last five meetings with W&M.
North Carolina A&T will look to halt Charleston’s four-game winning streak when the two face off at 7 p.m. as FloCollege’s Game of the Week. The Cougars have won all four previous meetings with the Aggies. N.C. A&T nearly took down CofC in last season’s tilt inside TD Arena, narrowly falling 66-63 on Feb. 6, 2025.
Stony Brook will put its five-game winning streak on the line when it welcomes Monmouth for a 7 p.m. tilt on FloCollege. Since the two programs joined the CAA, the Hawks are 4-2 against the Seawolves, including wins in each of the last three meetings. Stony Brook will look to claim its first win against Monmouth since a 72-65 win on Jan. 25, 2024.
Drexel will head south to take on Campbell in a 7 p.m. contest on FloCollege. Thursday will mark just the third all-time meeting between the two schools. The home team has won in each of the previous two showdowns.
Northeastern will head to Long Island to face Hofstra at 7 p.m. on FloCollege. A battle of two of the league’s top 3-point shooters, the Huskies’ William Kermoury is shooting 47.3% from distance, while Pride’s Preston Edmead sits right behind in second with 44.4% shooting from deep.
Hampton will play host to Elon, with tip-off slated for 7 p.m. on FloCollege. The Phoenix have secured three of their four all-time meetings with the Pirates, including a 70-62 inside Schar Center on Jan. 4, 2025. Hampton will look to secure its first win in the series since taking down Elon, 56-55, with a late bucket from Kyrese Mullen in the opening round of the 2024 CAA Men’s Basketball Championship.
SATURDAY’S ROLL THE TAPE
DJ Smith’s 39-point effort allowed Campbell to stave off a late surge and pick up a 104-96 road victory over William & Mary, handing the Tribe their first loss inside Kaplan Arena this season. The Camels’ top scorer watched six of his 12 makes go down from distance, including a 9-for-10 showing from the charity stripe in 39 minutes of work. Jeremiah Johnson chipped in 18 points on 6-of-12 shooting from the floor to go with five assists and four boards. Chris Fields Jr. put forth a 15-point, seven-rebound outing. The 104 points scored by Campbell set a program record for most points in a road game.
Kevon Vanderhorst beat the buzzer with a game-winning layup to lift Drexel to a 61-60 victory over N.C. A&T. After the Aggies’ Lewis Walker hit a triple from the wing, Vanderhorst stormed down the sideline before finger rolling his attempt off the glass and in as time expired to pull off the win. Shane Blakeney led the Dragons with a 19-point, nine-rebound performance, watching three of his eight makes fall from behind the arc. Eli Beard scored all 12 of his points from distance, hitting four 3-pointers in the win.
A pair of 17-point efforts from Rob Brown III and Andrej Shoshkikj propelled Stony Brook to its fifth-straight win with a 72-68 victory over Elon. Brown sank five 3-pointers in the triumph, adding two boards and a pair of steals to his final line. Shoshkikj tallied a trio of treys while finishing with eight rebounds, four assists and two swipes. The Seawolves outscored the Phoenix, 14-4, in second-chance points.
A 29-point showing from Dylan Williamson guided Towson to an 82-50 home triumph over Hampton. The Tigers’ leading scorer went 11-for-20 from the floor with five 3-pointers, adding seven assists and three boards. Jack Doumbia Jr. notched 15 points, 10 rebounds and three assists in 31 minutes of action. Mor Seck also eclipsed double figures in scoring with a perfect 5-for-5 shooting performance en route to an 11-point showing.
Hofstra captured a 73-57 victory on the road over Monmouth, thanks to a 24-point performance from Cruz Davis. The senior guard went 9-for-15 from the floor with four 3-pointers, four rebounds and two assists. Joshua Reaves went 5-for-6 from the floor, 4-of-5 from behind the arc and 3-of-3 from the charity stripe en route to 17 points in the win. Preston Edmead logged 13 points, eight assists and four boards in 38 minutes of work. Silas Sunday put forth a 12-point, 10-rebound double-double.
A 29-point, 11-assist double-double from Jlynn Counter helped orchestrate an 89-84 victory for Charleston over Northeastern. The Cougars’ top scorer went 9-for-15 from the floor and 10-of-13 from the charity stripe. The big man tandem of Christian Reeves and Chol Machot combined to score 29 points on a 13-for-17 showing inside the arc. The duo also pulled down 15 of the team’s 35 rebounds on the afternoon. The Huskies’ William Kermoury nearly willed his team to victory after going off for 36 points on 15-of-27 from the floor and six triples. The Cougars earned their fourth-straight win on Saturday.
CAMPBELL CAMELS (10-13; 4-6 CAA)
- DJ Smith paces the CAA in scoring with 24.5 ppg in conference play. He is also second in the league with 3.5 made triples per CAA game. Smith also became the eighth league player since the 2016-17 season to log at least 25 points in the first half of a game following his 25-point effort in the opening frame against William & Mary on Jan. 31.
- Campbell is tied for the CAA lead in scoring through 10 conference games, averaging 80.9 points per game to tie Northeastern.
CHARLESTON COUGARS (15-8; 8-2 CAA)
- Charleston has also been shooting at an efficient 58.4% inside the arc (101-173 FG) as a team. Christian Reeves has recorded 20.8 ppg and 12.3 rpg over the Cougars four-game winning streak. The Cougars’ big man has also shot an efficient 72.3% from the floor (34-47 FG) over that span.
- Jlynn Counter has produced a steady all-around game this season, but is notably putting together 18.8 ppg, 7.8 apg, 5.3 rpg and 1.8 spg during the four-game winning stretch.
DREXEL DRAGONS (12-11; 6-4 CAA)
- The Dragons have won six of its last seven games, holding its opposition to 56.3 ppg. The Dragons have held the opponents to a 23.5% shooting clip from distance (33-140 3FG).
- Drexel has been steady defensively, holding the opposition 60 points or fewer on nine occasions this season, good for the CAA’s top spot. The Dragons are ranked 20th in the nation in defensive effective field goal percentage at 46.6%, according to KenPom, a measurement guided by getting stops by taking into account the extra value of a made 3-pointer.
ELON PHOENIX (13-10; 5-5 CAA)
- Elon is one of three CAA teams averaging over 80.0 ppg this season, sitting second with 82.4 ppg. The Phoenix is also shooting 47.3% from the floor and 35.6% from deep.
- Chandler Cuthrell ranks top three in the conference and 21st in NCAA Division I with 20.7 ppg. The Phoenix’s top scorer has logged double-digit scoring efforts in 21 of 22 outings this season, including 20-point efforts on 15 occasions. He also ranks eighth in the nation averaging 33.4% of the team’s possession when he’s on the court, according to KenPom.
HAMPTON PIRATES (10-13; 4-6 CAA)
- Xzavier Long has been steady on the boards all season, ranking 13th in the nation with 10.2 rpg. He also sits ninth in Division I with 7.1 defensive rebounds per game, while being one of four league players to average more than three offensive rebounds per game (3.1 off. rpg)
- The Pirates sit second in points allowed in conference play, surrendering 66.9 ppg through 10 league contests.
HOFSTRA PRIDE (14-9; 5-5 CAA)
- The Pride has emerged as one of the top defensive teams in the country, holding the opposition to 39.9% shooting, good for 24th in NCAA Division I.
- Hofstra is one of two teams with two players inside the top 10 in scoring through 10 league games, as Cruz Davis is averaging 21.7 ppg (2nd in CAA) and Preston Edmead has notched 17.4 ppg (8th). The tandem is also top six in 3-pointers, watching Edmead sink 3.2 treys and Davis drain 2.6 triples per contest. The Pride’s leading scorer is also averaging 40.1 minutes per CAA game.
MONMOUTH HAWKS (11-12; 5-5 CAA)
- Corey Miller’s buzzer-beater against N.C. A&T marked Monmouth’s first win as time expired since Xander Rice hit a three at the horn to beat Campbell, 88-87, on Feb. 15, 2024. Miller also hit just his fifth career 3-pointer on that game-winner.
- The Hawks have emerged victorious in two of their last three games, led by 17.0 ppg, 9.3 rpg and 4.0 apg from Jason Rivera-Torres. Justin Ray (15.0 ppg), Cornelius Robinson Jr. (12.0 ppg) and Stefanos Spartalis (10.3 ppg) are all averaging double figures over that span.
N.C. A&T AGGIES (9-12; 2-8 CAA)
- N.C. A&T’s Zamoku Weluche-Ume has registered 13.2 points and 8.8 rebounds per contest. He also has six double-doubles in league action, including five in the last seven games.
- The Aggies’ Lewis Walker remains sixth among freshmen nationally with 19.1 ppg. Walker has logged double-digit scoring performances in 18 of his 20 appearances this season. His 33-point efforts against W&M and Towson were the most by a CAA freshman in a league game since James Madison’s Matt Lewis posted 33 points against Charleston on Feb. 15, 2018.
UNCW SEAHAWKS (19-3; 8-1 CAA)
- Nolan Hodge became the fifth CAA player to knock down at least seven 3-pointers in a conference game this season after connecting on seven trifectas against Towson on Jan. 29.
- UNCW will look to become the first CAA team to reach the 20-win plateau this season with a win on Thursday. It would mark the fifth straight season the Seahawks have registered 20 or more victories.
NORTHEASTERN HUSKIES (6-15; 2-8 CAA)
- William Kermoury has emerged as one of the league’s top shooters with a 43.4% clip from distance, good for 15th in the nation. Since the start of conference play, Kermoury is fifth in scoring with 19.9 ppg and averaging 4.3 triples per game.
- Kermoury went off for 36 points against Charleston, the most points by a Husky since Tyson Walker in 2021. The Stockholm native knocked down 15 shots, tied for the fourth most made field goals in a game and the most since Jordan Roland in 2019.
STONY BROOK SEAWOLVES (14-9; 6-4 CAA)
- Stony Brook is shooting 48.4% from the floor and 44.0% from behind the arc during its recent success.
- Erik Pratt has helped guide the Seawolves’ five-game winning streak, averaging 22.6 ppg to go with 7.2 apg and 6.0 rpg. Andrej Shoshkikj (17.8 ppg), Richard Goods (12.8 ppg), Ethan Simmon (11.8 ppg) and Rob Brown III (10.4 ppg) round out those in double figures.
TOWSON TIGERS (13-11; 5-6 CAA)
- Dylan Williamson is coming off his strongest performance of the season with a season-high 29 points against Hampton. It marked the fifth time Williamson has eclipsed the 20-point threshold this season.
- Towson is one of the nation’s best offensive rebounding teams, pulling down 13.9 per contest (15th in NCAA). Caleb Embeya is 19th in the country in offensive rebounding efficiency, according to KenPom, pulling down 16.4% of his chances.
WILLIAM & MARY TRIBE (14-8; 5-5 CAA)
- The Tribe moved into the top 10 in assists per game with 18.7, good for ninth. Chase Lowe paces the team with 4.1 apg. W&M also ranks 12th in fastbreak points (17.3 ppg).
- William & Mary is 9-1 inside Kaplan Arena this season. The Tribe is also 21-3 at home under the direction of Head Coach Brian Earl since his arrival.
