WASHINGTON, D.C. – Ninth-seeded Campbell shot 62.8% from the floor and used a balanced scoring effort with five players in double figures to hold off No. 8 Stony Brook, 96-89, in the second round of the 2026 Air Force Reserve CAA Men’s Basketball Championship on Saturday afternoon at CareFirst Arena.
The Camels (15-17) advance to play top-seeded UNCW at Noon on Sunday in quarterfinal action. Stony Brook closed the season with a 17-15 record.
Guard Jeremiah Johnson led Campbell with 20 points and backcourt mate DJ Smith added 18 points. Forward Dovydas Butka filled the stat sheet with 15 points, seven rebounds and nine assists for the Camels, while Muneer Newton scored 15 points of his own and Tasos Cook had 12 points off the bench. Along with its hot shooting, Campbell went to the free-throw line 56 times, hitting 37 of them.
Stony Brook got an outstanding performance from freshman guard Andrej Shoshkikj, who poured in a career-high 35 points, which were the most ever scored by a freshman in the CAA Tournament. Guard Erik Pratt contributed 23 points and Rob Brown III tallied 22 as the trio combined for 80 of the Seawolves’ 89 points.
In a fast-paced opening half, Stony Brook put together a 9-2 run and took a 26-19 lead on Shoshkikj’s three-pointer from the left wing with 11:47 to play. Campbell responded with 11 consecutive points over the next three minutes, capped by a steal and layup from Chris Fields, Jr., to go on top, 30-26.
The Camels maintained their momentum for the remainder of the period, going up by 10 on a Butka layup in the final minute before taking a 46-38 advantage into the half. Campbell shot a sizzling 63% (17-27 FG) from the floor over the first 20 minutes, while Stony Brook hit 50% of its field goal attempts, including five treys.
Campbell maintained control of the game through much of the second half, pushing their lead to as much as 16, 69-53, on a pair of Johnson free throws with 10:10 remaining. The Camels were still up by 12 with under six minutes to go when Stony Brook rallied behind Shoshkikj. The freshman scored 11 straight points for the Seawolves, with his pull-up jumper bringing the Seawolves within 81-77 with 3:13 on the clock.
However, the Camels sealed the victory from the free-throw line, draining 11-of-14 from the charity stripe over the final 2:24.
