WASHINGTON, D.C. – Behind a combined 55 points from all-conference guards Tyler Tejada and Dylan Williamson, No. 7 Towson fought off a furious comeback from No. 10 Hampton and posted a 74-68 victory in the second round of the Air Force Reserve CAA Men’s Basketball Championship on Saturday night at CareFirst Arena.

Towson (18-14) advances to face No. 2 Charleston at 6 p.m. on Sunday in the quarterfinals. Hampton ended its season with a 13-19 record.
Tejada poured in a career-high 35 points and Williamson tallied 20 to account for the majority of the Tigers’ offense. Hampton was led by guard Michael Eley, who scored 16 of his team-high 23 points in the final 4:26 to spur the Pirates’ late comeback. Etienne Strothers and Daniel Johnson added 11 points apiece for the Pirates.

Towson broke open a tight game late in the first half, reeling off 10 consecutive points capped by a Jaquan Womack layup that put the Tigers ahead 24-12 with 3:31 on the clock. Towson maintained a double-digit advantage for the rest of the period, taking a 30-17 lead into halftime following a Williamson jumper with 22 seconds left. The Tigers held the Pirates to just 30.8% FG shooting in the first 20 minutes, including 0-for-5 from three.

Hampton opened the second half with a layup from Jalyke Gaines-Wyatt, but Tejada scored seven points in a 9-0 surge that put Towson ahead 39-19. The Tigers kept a comfortable lead for most of the half and expanded it to 23 (63-40) with 5:02 remaining.

However, the Pirates rallied behind Eley, going on an 18-1 run that brought them within 64-58 on a tip-in by the junior guard with 1:16 to go. Towson was able to build its lead back to 10, but Eley drilled back-to-back treys that made it 70-66 with 10 seconds to play. A pair of free throws from Tejada sealed the victory for the Tigers.
