RICHMOND, Va. (April 23, 2026) – CAA Commissioner Joe D’Antonio has announced the hiring of Michael Stephens as the conference’s new Coordinator of Men’s Basketball Officials.

During his 25-year career at the Division I level, Stephens built a reputation as one of the top men’s basketball officials in the nation. He was selected to work in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship 19 times, earned an assignment to the Final Four on seven occasions, and was chosen to officiate three national championship games.

Since leaving the floor, Stephens has worked as an officiating coordinator for the past four years. He has overseen the officiating programs and provided training for officials at all levels of college basketball, including two Division I conferences.

“We are pleased to have Michael Stephens as the CAA’s new Coordinator of Men’s Basketball Officials,” D’Antonio said. “During his outstanding career on the floor, Mike was not only highly regarded for his ability to call a game, but he was known as an excellent communicator with coaches and student-athletes. Those same skills have allowed him to excel in his role as a supervisor, and we look forward to having him as part of our staff.”

Stephens replaces John Cahill, who has stepped aside from his role with the CAA after coordinating the conference’s officiating program for the past nine years.

“I would like to thank John Cahill for his work over the past nine seasons,” D’Antonio said. “Under his guidance, the CAA’s officiating program has developed into one of the best in the country and he has mentored some of the top officials in the game.”
