RICHMOND, Va. – For the fourth straight season, the top-seeded Stony Brook women’s lacrosse team (17-2) hoisted the CAA Championship following an 18-7 victory over No. 3 seed Towson (8-11) inside Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium on Saturday.
The Seawolves become just the second lacrosse program in CAA to notch four consecutive conference crowns, joining James Madison’s women’s lacrosse team from 2017-19 & 2021. The 2020 Championship was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Stony Brook has won 38 straight games against conference opponents (regular season and postseason) since joining the CAA in 2023.
The tournament’s Most Outstanding Player Isabella Caporuscio unloaded six goals and an assist, tallying the most goals in a CAA title game since the Tigers’ Andi Raymond scored six of her own in 2014. She also reached the 60-goal threshold with her 10 total snipes in the CAA Tournament. The reigning CAA Midfielder of the Year caused five turnovers and picked up four ground balls in the win.
Fellow All-Tournament team selection Katie Walsh registered five goals and a helper, while Julia Fusco notched four snipes and an assist. Mirabella Altebrando dished out a season-high seven helpers in the victory.
Towson’s Hannah Lewis and Elise Smigiel each scored three goals in the title game, while Luca DeMaio added a snipe and two assists of her own.
Haydin Eisfeld, also a CAA All-Tournament selection, notched two of the Seawolves’ first three goals, finding twine less than a minute apart to force a Towson timeout. The Tigers quickly responded with DeMaio and Lewis each scoring 59 seconds apart and bringing Towson to within one, 3-2, with just over six minutes to play in the first quarter. After exchanging goals, Stony Brook’s Walsh tapped in a one-timed attempt in front of the crease from Altebrando to take a 5-3 edge through 15 minutes.
The Tigers tied the game at six midway through the second quarter after back-to-back goals in transition from Lewis and Elise Smigiel. Stretch passes led Towson’s breakout on both possessions, ultimately finding the goal scorers in close with only the keeper to beat. Fusco put top-seeded Stony Brook back ahead, 8-6, at the break with a pair of goals in the final 3:15 of the half.
Caporuscio took over in the third quarter as she netted three straight goals to take an 11-6 advantage. Walsh made it six consecutive goals for the Seawolves after tucking in her attempt past the keeper to take a 12-6 lead into the final period.
After a Jeilline Bonilla rip to take a seven-goal edge, Towson’s Smigiel found the back of the net with under 11 minutes to go to halt the scoring spree. The Seawolves closed the game on a 4-0 run before sealing the double-digit and hoisting its fourth CAA title.
The Seawolves received an automatic bid to the NCAA Women’s Lacrosse Championship and will learn their next opponent on the NCAA Selection Show on Sunday, May 3, at 9 p.m. ESPNU will carry the national telecast.
