WILMINGTON, N.C. (May 20, 2026) – Fifth-seeded Hofstra used a pair of six-run innings and a dominant pitching performance from senior Carlos Martinez to roll past #4 Charleston, 13-0, in the opening game of the 2026 CAA Baseball Championship on Wednesday afternoon at Brooks Field.
The Pride (21-27) will take on either #1 Campbell or #2 Northeastern in the winner’s bracket on Thursday, while the Cougars (28-27) face an elimination game at 11 a.m. on Thursday morning.
Martinez, a first-team All-CAA honoree, scattered three singles over 6.0 scoreless innings and struck out six to up his record to 6-2. The right-hander, who allowed just one runner to reach second base all afternoon, hasn’t given up a run over his last 17.1 frames.
Michael Brown, Tyler Castrataro and Michael Craig contributed two hits for the Hofstra offense, while CJ Griggs and Nick Biddle each drove in three.
First baseman Alex LaCoste was the only Charleston player with multiple hits, going 2-for-3.
Hofstra received timely hitting and took advantage of some Charleston defensive miscues to break the game open in the third. Castrataro opened the frame with a double, advanced to third on a ground out and then beat a throw to the plate on Brown’s grounder to first. A Cougars’ error resulted in a second Hofstra run and the Pride was able to load the bases with two outs. Tyler Cox delivered a single to left that plated two and Biddle followed with a two-run single to right that gave Hofstra a commanding 6-0 advantage.
The Pride tacked on another unearned run in the fourth to up their lead to 7-0. Danny Corona singled up the middle and advanced to second on an error. Craig’s sacrifice bunt moved Corona to third and he came home on Brown’s sacrifice fly.
Hofstra closed the game out by tallying six runs in the seventh. Griggs launched a three-run homer, his 9
th of the season, to make it 10-0. The Pride added two more on a fielder’s choice and an error and Craig’s base hit brought in the game’s final run.
