Georgia State leads the men's field after day 1 of the CAA golf championship

PINEHURST, N.C. (April 14, 2006) – Georgia State shot a 2-over par 286 to take a nine-stroke lead after the opening round of the 2006 CAA Men’s Golf Championship at the Pinehurst No. 6 course in Pinehurst, N.C.

Trailing the Panthers in second place is VCU, which posted an 11-over par 295, while Delaware is third at 303. James Madison (306) is in fourth place and defending champ UNC Wilmington (309) is in fifth after 18 holes of the 54-hole event.

James Madison’s Scott Marino is the individual leader, firing a 3-under par 68, which included a blistering 32 on the back nine. Tied for second just two shots back at 1-under par 70 are VCU’s Manuel Relancio and Georgia State’s Mark Haastrup.

Georgia State, which is 10th in the nation in the latest Golfstat rankings, had three players shoot par or bettter on Friday, led by Haastrup. Tied for fourth with an even par 71 were teammates Steve Tiley and Joel Sjoholm. VCU’s Jens Fahrbring is also tied for fourth after shooting 71.

The second round will get underway Saturday morning at 6,961-yard par 71 course.
