No. 1 James Madison 23, No. 7 Villanova 19

VILLANOVA, Pa. -- Rodney Landers found Bosco Williams for the game-winning 35-yard touchdown pass with no time left as top-ranked James Madison rallied past Villanova 23-19 on Saturday.

A poor punt gave James Madison (7-1, 5-0 Colonial Athletic Association), which is No. 1 in both Football Championship Subdivision polls, the ball at its own 34-yard line with 1:01 left.

Battling rainy, gusty weather, Landers accounted for all 66 yards on the drive, completing three passes and rushing for 11 yards before he found Williams for the game-winning score.

Villanova (5-2, 3-1) took a 19-14 lead early in the fourth after Chris Whitney threw a 6-yard touchdown pass to Phil Atkinson with 14:09 left. But the Dukes got a 25-yard field goal from Dave Stannard with 4:08 left and forced the Wildcats to punt on their next possession.

Punter Joe Marcoux's kick went just 14 yards, giving the Dukes a slim chance to drive for the game-winning score.

James Madison took a 14-10 lead into halftime on two TD passes by Landers. He threw a 23-yard scoring pass to Griff Yancey in the first quarter and added a 55-yard TD pass to Rockeed McCarter early in the second.

Villanova responded after halftime with a 37-yard field goal by Marcoux and then took the lead on Atkinson's TD catch.

Landers threw for 184 yards and three touchdowns and ran for 133 yards.

Aaron Ball rushed for 108 yards and Matthew Szczur scored on a 15-yard run in the second quarter for the Wildcats. Marcoux kicked two field goals for Villanova, including a 42-yarder in the first.

 

No. 10 New Hampshire 42, Towson 14

DURHAM, N.H. -- R.J. Toman threw for 292 yards and four touchdowns to lead New Hampshire to a 42-14 rout over Towson on Saturday.

The Wildats (6-1, 3-1 Colonial Athletic Conference) won their 500th game as a football program.

New Hampshire scored 28 points in the second quarter, sparked by Toman's 48-yard touchdown pass to Mike Boyle. Robert Simpson scored on a 68-yard run to put the Wildcats ahead 21-7.

Toman, who completed 20 of 26 passes, had a 14-yard passing score to Boyle in the second. Toman threw another touchdown for 7 yards to Sean Jellison in the game quarter as New Hampshire claimed a 35-7.

Terrance Fox, who had 103 yards on four receptions, caught a 40-yard touchdown from Toman in the fourth quarter for the Wildcats. Simpson finished with 85 yards rushing on 11 carries.

Sean Schaefer went 34-of-48 passing for 309 yards, threw one touchdown and two interceptions for the Tigers (3-5, 1-3), who have lost five straight games against New Hampshire. Hakeem Moore caught nine passes for 110 yards.

 

Maine 20, Northeastern 0

ORONO, Maine -- Lamir Whetstone came up with two of his team's four interceptions Saturday as Maine beat Northeastern 20-0 Saturday.

The Black Bears kept pounding at the Huskies with a run attack that featured quarterback Mike Brusko, who had 13 carries and 93 yards, and fullback Jared Turcotte, who had 18 carries for 68 yards. Maine (5-3, 3-2 Colonial Athletic Association) had 246 rushing yards altogether.

Brusko also completed touchdown passes of 14 and 39 yards to wide receiver Landis Williams in the second and third quarters.

Northeastern (2-6, 1-3 CAA) was unable to put together any consistent offense as Maine controlled the football and the game clock.

Maine's grinding running attack kept Northeastern's offense on the sidelines as the Black Bears maintained possession of the ball 38 minutes, 20 seconds.

For the Huskies, the turnovers didn't help. Anthony Orio threw three interceptions, one of which was returned 79 yards by Mark Masterson for a touchdown, and backup John Sperrazza accounted for the other. The Huskies mustered only 69 yards on the ground.

 

No. 23 William & Mary 34, Rhode Island 24

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- Jonathan Grimes rushed for 111 yards and a touchdown to lead William & Mary to a 34-24 victory over Rhode Island on Saturday.

The Tribe (5-2, 3-1 Colonial Athletic Conference) trailed 10-7 at halftime before scoring 24 second-half points.

Derek Cassidy was 27 of 41 for 225 yards, threw two touchdowns and ran for one for Rhode Island (2-7, 0-5), but also threw three interceptions.

William & Mary took a 14-10 lead on Jake Phillips' 18-yard pass to D.J. McAulay with 13:23 left in the third, and increased its margin to 21-10 on Courtland Marriner's 8-yard run about five minutes later.

Phillips was 15 of 24 for 207 yards and one touchdown.

Cassidy scored on a 1-yard run to cut the lead to 21-17 but David Caldwell returned an interception 62 yards for a touchdown and Brian Pate kicked two field goals to put the game out of reach.

 

No. 17 Massachusetts 42, Bryant 7

AMHERST, Mass. -- Liam Coen passed for five touchdowns as Massachusetts cruised to a 42-7 victory over Bryant on Saturday.

Coen, who completed 11 of 18 passes and ended with a career-high 389 yards passing, struck for his team's first three scores as the Minutemen (5-3) rolled to a 21-0 lead in the first quarter. The team extended its lead to 35-7 at halftime.

Jeremy Horne caught three of Coen's touchdown tosses. The first was for 16 yards to open the game's scoring. He also scored on passes of 21 yards in the second quarter and 54 yards in the third period to wind up with 182 yards in receptions.

Coen's other TD passes were for 80 yards to Matt Silver and for 37 yards to Victor Cruz.

Bryant (4-4) scored its only points with 20 seconds remaining in the first quarter as Lindsey Gamble capped a 75-yard drive with a 6-yard run.

UMass wound up with 593 yards in total offense, compared to 217 for Bryant. Korrey Davis with 54 yards and Chris Zardas, with 53 yards, were the rushing leaders for UMass, which did all its scoring in the first three quarters.

Bryant's Kurt Spear completed 7 of 17 passes for 70 yards. Ross Giffune caught 3 passes for 27 yards and Michael Canfora caught two passes for 25 yards. The team is in the first of four transitional years from Division II to Division I.

 

No. 9 Richmond 48, Georgetown 0

RICHMOND, Va. -- Josh Vaughan ran for 157 yards and two touchdowns to help Richmond rout Georgetown 48-0 on Saturday.

Garrett Wilkins, who rushed for 86 yards on 17 carries, scored on a 12-yard run to give the Spiders (6-3) a 14-0 lead in the second quarter. A 25-yard field goal by Brian Radford and Vaughan's 15-yard rushing score put Richmond ahead by 24 points at halftime.

Richmond outgained the Hoyas 427-88 in total yards.

The Spiders held Georgetown (1-6) without a first down until 4:43 left in the third quarter. Vaughan, who finished with 24 carries, scored on a 15-yard run and Wilkins added a 6-yard touchdown run in the third.

Eric Ward, who completed 7 of 12 passes, threw 112 yards and one interception for Richmond. He also had 37 yards rushing and a 1-yard touchdown run in the first quarter.

Three Georgetown quarterbacks combined for only had 8 yards passing. Their leading rusher was Phillip Olageji with 35 yards.

 

Delaware 17, Hofstra 0

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. -- Junior Jabbie ran for 155 yards and a touchdown to help Delaware halt a three-game losing streak with a 17-0 victory over Hofstra in a rain-soaked game on Saturday.

Robbie Agnone had a 1-yard touchdown catch and Jon Striefski kicked a 27-yard field goal for the Blue Hens (3-5, 1-3 Colonial).

The Pride (3-5, 1-3) lost for the third time in four games.
