CAA champion James Madison received a #4 seed in the Raleigh regional and regular-season champ UNC Wilmington earned a #2 seed in the Cary regional as an at-large team. The CAA had multiple teams participate in the NCAA’s each year from 1998-2004, but had just one entry for the past three seasons.

UNCW Reaches Regional Championship Game: UNC Wilmington posted a 2-2 record at the Cary Regional and reached the regional finals for the third time in four NCAA appearances. The 2nd-seeded Seahawks opened the regional with a 5-2 victory over #3 Elon as junior pitcher Brad Holt scattered six hits to capture his 11th straight decision (11-1) and freshman Alex Hill went 4-for-4 at the plate. UNCW fell 5-1 to #1 North Carolina in Saturday’s winner’s bracket despite a complete-game pitching effort from senior Jeff Hatcher (6-2), who fanned nine. In a Sunday rematch with Elon, UNCW exploded for 11 runs in the ninth and overcame a six-run deficit to stun the Phoenix 15-11. Sophomore outfielder Bobby Leeper went 4-for-5 and drove in three in the victory. In the regional final, UNCW dropped a 7-3 decision to UNC. Senior outfielder Jason Appel led the way with a 3-for-5 effort. The Seahawks loaded the bases in the ninth, but couldn’t rally. UNCW’s Nate Hall, Mark Carver, Leeper and Holt received All-Regional honors.

JMU Goes 1-2 At Raleigh Regional: James Madison went 1-2 at the Raleigh Regional in its first NCAA appearance since 2002. The fourth-seeded Dukes were tied 2-2 in the seventh against #1 N.C. State in their opener before dropping a 6-2 decision. JMU was held to three hits in the loss, including RBI doubles from Joe Lake and McKinnon Langston. JMU overcame a 10-2 deficit to defeat Charlotte 13-12 in a Saturday elimination game. Four Dukes had three hits in the win, led by Brett Sellers, who was 3-for-4 with a homer, three RBI and three runs scored. JMU got a two-run double from Chris Johnson in the top of the ninth to tie #2 South Carolina on Sunday, but the Gamecocks smacked a walk-off two-run homer in the bottom of the frame to win 7-5. McKinnon Langston and Matt Browning each went 2-for-4 in the loss.

JMU Captures First CAA Title: Second-seeded James Madison defeated #6 Towson 6-1 last Saturday to capture its first championship in the 23-year history of CAA baseball. Junior right-hander Kurt Houck fired a complete-game four-hitter in the title game for the Dukes, giving up only an unearned run in the eighth while striking out six. JMU was the only unbeaten team in the tournament, which featured plenty of offense with 182 runs and 34 homers in the 10 contests. All six teams in the tournament batted .300 or better and JMU’s 4.25 team ERA was the only earned run average under 9.00 for the event.

Foltz Selected As Tournament MOP: James Madison sophomore outfielder Alex Foltz was selected as the Most Outstanding Player at the 2008 CAA Baseball Championship after batting .647 (11-17) with seven runs scored and seven RBI. Mason’s Krieger Sets Tourney Records: George Mason junior outfielder Scott Krieger set new CAA Tournament records with 14 RBI and 32 total bases in just four games. The previous tournament RBI mark of 11 was shared by three players and Krieger broke the total bases record of 31 set by W&M’s Michael Brown in 2000 in five games. Krieger also tied a tournament record with three home runs in the Patriots’ 18-14 setback to James Madison on May 23.

Six Teams Reach 30-Win Mark: Six CAA baseball teams reached the 30-win mark in 2008. UNC Wilmington set a school record with 44 victories, which was its fifth 40-win campaign in the past six seasons. The last time that the CAA had six 30-victory squads was 2000.

UNCW’s Carver Headlines All-CAA Baseball Team: UNC Wilmington senior catcher Mark Carver was selected as the 2008 CAA Baseball Player of the Year, becoming the first Seahawk to earn the honor since 1996.
