FINAL 2009 CAA MEN'S SOCCER REPORT

Three CAA Players Receive All-America Honors: Three CAA players earned NSCAA All-America honors. Old Dominion senior midfielder Nane Joseph was named to the second team after leading the Monarchs with 15 points on six goals and three assists. Receiving third-team honors were UNC Wilmington junior defender Indy Smith and William & Mary senior forward Andrew Hoxie. Smith, who is the Seahawks’ first NCAA All-American selection, anchored a UNCW defense that allowed only six goals in CAA play. Hoxie, the CAA Player of the Year, topped the conference with 10 goals, 12 assists and 32 points.

16 CAA Players Named All-Region:
Sixteen CAA players were chosen to the NSCAA All-South Atlantic Region squad. Six players made the first team - UNCW junior defender Indy Smith, Hofstra senior defender Richard Martinez, ODU senior midfielder Nane Joseph, William & Mary junior midfielder Nathaniel Baako, W&M senior forward Andrew Hoxie and JMU junior forward CJ Sapong. Selected to the second team were UNCW junior goalkeeper Brock Duckworth, UNCW senior defender David Acosta, W&M senior defender Roger Bothe, George Mason senior midfielder Richard Edgar and Towson sophomore midfielder Liam Maloney. Named to the All-Region third team were Mason senior goalkeeper Sean Kelley, Hofstra senior defender Jamal Neptune, Drexel senior midfielder Fabio Assumpcao, Hofstra senior midfielder Rob Youhill and Delaware senior forward Darren Christie.

Four CAA Players Recognized On Academic All-America Teams:
Four CAA men’s soccer players were recognized on national academic teams. George Mason senior midfielder Richard Edgar was chosen to the ESPN the Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-America first team and Delaware senior defender Kyle Davis was named to the Academic All-America second team. A pair of William & Mary players were named to the NSCAA Men’s College Scholar All-America squad, with junior midfielder Nathaniel Baako making the first team and senior defender Roger Bothe selected to the second team.

Five Players Honored By TopDrawerSoccer: Five CAA players were recognized by soccer web site TopDrawerSoccer.com. W&M senior forward Andrew Hoxie was named to the site’s Team of the Season first team, while UNCW defender Indy Smith and Hofstra defender Richard Martinez received honorable mention. On the site’s All-Rookie squad, Northeastern forward Don Anding made the first team and UNCW forward Etienne Boulanger made the second team.

Mason’s Edgar Chosen to Lowe’s All-America Squad: George Mason senior midfielder Richard Edgar was chosen to the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award Senior All-America team. The team is made up of the most outstanding senior student-athletes in Division I men’s soccer. Edgar, who is a three-time All-CAA selection, was also chosen as the CAA Scholar-Athlete of the Year in men’s soccer.

Seahawks Fall 2-1 To Wake Forest In NCAA Second Round:
UNC Wilmington saw the most successful season in school history come to an end with a 2-1 setback at 3rd-ranked Wake Forest. The Seahawks fell behind 2-0 late in the second half, but cut the margin in half when Shawn Guderian scored his fifth goal of the season off a Daniel Roberts assist with 4:59 left in regulation. Junior goalkeeper Brock Duckworth finished with seven saves in the contest.

UNCW Advances Past Charlotte In NCAA College Cup: CAA champion UNC Wilmington advanced to the second round of the NCAA College Cup 4-1 on penalty kicks after battling to a 1-1 tie at Charlotte. The Seahawks, who were making their first NCAA appearance, extended their school-record unbeaten streak to 14 matches. Junior Daniel Roberts’ 22-yard free kick with less than nine minutes left in regulation tied the match and the Seahawks converted on all four of their penalty kick attempts. Goalkeeper Brock Duckworth made five saves and had a key stop of a penalty kick.

CAA Success In The College Cup: The CAA has fared well in the NCAA men’s soccer College Cup, with at least one team advancing to the second round in each of the past eight seasons. UNC Wilmington was the lone CAA representative in this year’s event, which marked just the third time since 1995 that the conference had only one team make the NCAA Tournament.

UNCW Ranked Nationally: UNC Wilmington was ranked #18 in the nation by Soccer America, #19 by College Soccer News and #22 by the NSCAA in their final soccer polls.

Seven CAA Teams Among Top 78 In NCAA RPI: Seven CAA teams were ranked among the top 78 in the nation in the final NCAA RPI report. UNC Wilmington topped all CAA squads at #34, followed by William & Mary at #36, Old Dominion at #54, George Mason at #66, Hofstra at #72, James Madison at #74 and Northeastern at #78.

CAA Dominates Regional Rankings: Six of the 10 teams in the final regular season NSCAA South Atlantic Regional rankings on Nov. 10 were from the CAA. UNC Wilmington and William & Mary were tied at #3, followed by Old Dominion at #5, James Madison at #7, George Mason at #8 and Northeastern at #9. Maryland was ranked #1 in the South Atlantic region and Virginia was #2.

Trio of CAA Players Among National Stat Leaders: Three CAA men’s soccer players were ranked among the top 10 in the nation in various statistical categories this season. UNCW goalkeeper Brock Duckworth finished 2nd in save percentage (.886) and 10th in goals against average (0.638). W&M forward Andrew Hoxie was 3rd in assists per game (0.63) and 10th in points per game (1.68 ppg). JMU midfielder CJ Sapong ranked seventh in points per game (1.75 ppg), 16th in goals per game (0.63 gpg) and 17th in assists per game (0.50 apg).

Solid Non-Conference Performance: The CAA fared well in non-conference action as the league’s men’s soccer squads combined for a 42-32-4 mark.

UNCW Edges Northeastern 1-0 In CAA Championship Game: Junior Nassim Berhouni’s goal with 3:36 left in regulation lifted top-seeded UNC Wilmington to a 1-0 victory over #3 Northeastern in the title game of the CAA Men’s Soccer Championship in Wilmington, N.C. It was the first CAA men’s soccer soccer championship ever for the Seahawks. The winnng goal was set up by a long throw-in from sophomore Christian Davidson into the middle of the box, where Berhouni took the ball off one bounce and scored from eight yards out. NU out-shot UNCW 16-7, but Seahawks keeper Brock Duckworth made four saves and recorded his fourth consecutive shutout.

Northeastern, UNCW Earn Wins In CAA Semifinals:
Third-seeded Northeastern advanced to the CAA championship game for the second year in a row with a 2-1 overtime triumph against #2 William & Mary, while #1 UNC Wilmington made the finals for the first time by beating #4 Old Dominion 1-0. Freshman Andre Ciliotta’s goal with 2:40 remaining in the first overtime sent the Huskies past the Tribe. NU took a 1-0 lead in the 52nd minute on Don Anding’s seventh goal of the year, but the Tribe got the equalizer in the 72nd minute as Nathaniel Baako scored from 12 yards out. In the nightcap, UNCW junior Allen Lomax scored from 20 yards out in the 32nd minute for the game-winning goal. The Seahawks’ defense took over from there, limiting the Monarchs to just five shots in the contest.

Tribe’s Hoxie Headlines All-CAA Men’s Soccer Team:
William & Mary senior forward Andrew Hoxie, who tied for the CAA lead in goals (10) and topped the conference in assists (12) and points (32), was selected as the 2009 CAA men’s soccer Player of the Year. He was the first Tribe player to win the award since 1997. CAA Defender of the Year honors went to Hofstra senior Richard Martinez, who led a Pride defense that recorded shutouts in six of the team’s 11 conference contests. Northeastern freshman forward Don Anding, who led the Huskies with seven goals and 16 points, was named the CAA Rookie of the Year. UNC Wilmington’s Aidan Heaney was selected as the CAA Coach of the Year for the second straight season. Heaney guided the Seahawks to the league’s regular-season and tournament titles. UNCW became the first squad since 2006 to go undefeated (8-0-3) in conference play.

Three Players Named ECAC All-Stars: Three CAA players were honored on the ECAC Division I Men’s Soccer All-Star team. W&M senior forward Andrew Hoxie and James Madison junior midfielder CJ Sapong were selected to the first team and Delaware senior midfielder Darren Christie made the second team.
