CAA CHAMPIONSHIPS SCHEDULE APPROVED FOR 2009-10 SEASON
RICHMOND, Va. (June 8, 2009) ? The Colonial Athletic Association Executive Committee approved the dates and sites for the 2009-10 conference championships during the league’s annual meetings last week.
The committee voted to keep the CAA Baseball Championship in Wilmington, N.C. through 2011. The double-elimination tournament has been conducted at 3,500-seat Brooks Field on the campus of UNC Wilmington since 2004 and has thrived in terms of attendance and corporate support.
Brooks Field is considered one of the finest on-campus complexes in the collegiate ranks. The complex features three regulation fields, a three-story press box, permanent chair-back seating and state of the art irrigation and drainage systems.
“UNC Wilmington has done an excellent job as the host of the CAA Baseball Championship,” CAA Commissioner Tom Yeager said. “Brooks Field is a first-class facility for the event and we look forward to building on the success of past years.”
In response to the changing economic conditions, the committee voted to reduce the championship field size from six to four teams in baseball, men’s and women’s soccer, field hockey and volleyball. The soccer, field hockey and volleyball championships will be held at the site of the tournament’s top seed.
The committee also shortened the swimming and diving championship from four days to three.
“There is always great reluctance to reduce conference championship opportunities in any sport,” Yeager said. “We remain committed to providing the best experience for our student-athletes during both regular-season and championship competition, but we also must deal with the reality of very challenging economic times.”
