CAA Football Players of the Week -- Sept. 7

Offensive Player of the Week - Brandyn Harvey, WR, Villanova
Harvey, the CAA Football Offensive Player of the Week, helped lead Villanova to a come-from-behind win over Temple last Thursday, 27-24.  The senior hauled in a career-high nine catches for a career-best 142 yards in the win over the Owls.  Harvey, a native of Spring Valley, Calif., scored the Wildcats’ game-tying touchdown on a six-yard toss from ‘Nova quarterback Chris Whitney with just 1:24 left in the contest.  Eight of Harvey’s nine catches and 132 of his 142 receiving yards came during the game’s second half.

Defensive Player of the Week - B.W. Webb, DB, William and Mary
Webb, who made his first career start Saturday in William and Mary’s 26-14 win over Virginia, is the CAA Football Defensive Player of the Week.  The redshirt-freshman forced three of the seven Wahoo turnovers in the way of interceptions marking a William and Mary frosh record.  The Newport News, Va., native put the finishing touches on his evening and the win for the Tribe when he picked off a Jameel Sewell pass at the 50 and returned it for a touchdown.  The pick-six put William and Mary up 25-14 with just under three minutes left in the game.

Special Teams Player of the Week - Nick Yako, PK, Villanova
Yako, the CAA Football Special Teams Player of the Week, helped Villanova top Temple 27-24 Thursday evening in Philadelphia, Pa.  The redshirt-freshman placekicker was perfect on the night connecting on 3-of-3 PATs and 2-of-2 in field goal tries.  The Cleveland, Ohio, native, who had drilled a 27-yard field goal attempt earlier in the game, lifted the Wildcats to their third win all-time over an FBS foe when he hit a 32-yarder as time expired in the contest at Lincoln Financial Field.

Rookie of the Week - D.J. Adeoba, LB, Massachusetts
Adeoba earned CAA Football Rookie of the Week honors after helping pull Massachusetts within five of Kansas State on the road Saturday evening with a special teams highlight.  The redshirt-freshman, who made his first career start, picked up a blocked punt early in the fourth quarter and returned it 26 yards for a touchdown cutting the K-State lead to 21-16.  Adeoba, a Hollywood, Fla., native also recorded seven tackles in UMass’ 21-17 loss to the Wildcats.

CAA Football In The Polls
For a complete rundown of both the Sports Network Top-25 and the FCS Coaches Poll visit page 22 of the weekly release.  Below are highlights and notes about CAA Football in this week’s rankings.

The Sports Network Top-25
The league’s seven ranked teams mark the most ranked CAA Football squads since the Nov. 10 edition of the poll in 2008 when it also showed seven among the Top-25.  Richmond’s No. 1 ranking helps the league regain the poll’s top-spot, which it held 11-straight weeks in 2008.  CAA Football squads make up half of the poll’s Top-10, no other league has more than two teams in the Top-10.

CAA Football has now had at least six teams ranked in 16 of the last 17 editions of the Sports Network poll.  The league has also had at least three teams ranked every week since the poll’s inception, and two teams among the poll’s Top-10 in 57-straight weeks and 83 of the last 87 editions.

FCS Coaches Top-25
Seven CAA Football squads appeared in this week’s Top-25, one fewer than the total which appeared in the preseason poll release.  Richmond’s No. 1 ranking helps the league reclaim the poll’s top-spot after it owned No. 1 for 11-straight weeks in 2008.  CAA Football teams make up half of the poll’s Top-10, no other league has more than two teams in the Top-10.

Since the FCS Coaches Poll debuted in 2007 CAA Football has had at least four squads ranked in every edition (30 weeks).  The league’s seven total teams among this edition’s Top-25 marks the second most-ever from a single conference to appear in a weekly edition of the FCS Coaches Poll -- CAA Football had eight in the 2009 Preseason edition.

Bring On The BCS/FBS
CAA Football opened the 2009 season by winning three games against BCS/FBS foes.  Villanova upended Temple (27-24), William and Mary stunned Virginia (26-14) and Richmond beat Duke (24-16) in the first weekend of 2009.

The league heads into Week Two of the 2009 season with a mark of 3-3 against BCS/FBS foes, including a 2-1 record against the Atlantic Coast Conference.  James Madison can extend the series lead when it faces Maryland Saturday at 6 p.m.

CAA Football is also 1-0 against the Mid-American Conference.  New Hampshire has a chance to widen the series when it travels to Ball State Saturday at 7 p.m.  Hofstra can also add a notch to the league’s win column against the MAC when it takes on Western Michigan later this season (Sept. 26, 7 p.m.).

Prior to 2009, the league had beaten three BCS/FBS teams during the same season only once -- 2000.  Richmond topped Arkansas State (30-27), Northeastern beat Connecticut (35-27) and Rhode Island beat Connecticut (26-21).  The caveat to that note is that UConn was in its first year of NCAA Division I transition in football, after having spent 52 years (1947-99) in the Yankee/Atlantic 10 Conference at the I-AA level.

CAA Football has now won 19 games versus BCS/FBS opponents in the last 13 years.  The league has garnered at least one win over BCS/FBS foes in seven of the last eight years, and multiple wins over BCS/FBS teams in six of the last eight years.

For a complete list of CAA Football’s wins over BCS/FBS opponents check out page 21 of the weekly release.

HOFSTRA (1-0, 0-0 CAA)
This Week:  at Bryant (1-0)
Next Week:  at #1/1 Richmond (1-0, 0-0)

-- Hofstra’s win over Stony Brook marked its 399th in school history. The Pride is now 399-262-11 since the program started in 1937.

#6/6 JAMES MADISON (0-0, 0-0 CAA)
This Week:  at Maryland (0-1)
Next Week:  VMI (1-0)

-- James Madison is ranked No. 6 in both the FCS Coaches Poll and the Sports Network Top-25 following Week One action.

-- Returning this season for the Dukes is 2008 CAA Football Special Teams Player of the Year Scotty McGee.  McGee, an electrifying returnman for JMU, had a knack for turning the tables in games with his punt and kick return ability, including a kickoff return for a touchdown against Appalachian State and a last-second punt return for a touchdown at Richmond.

-- When the Dukes face Maryland this weekend they will be facing a familiar foe in Maryland’s new defensive coordinator Don Brown.  Brown left Massachusetts  (CAA Football conference member) after the 2008 season, and had compiled a mark of 42-19 in his five years leading the Minutemen.

#17/18 MASSACHUSETTS (0-1, 0-0 CAA)
This Week:  Albany (0-1)
Next Week:  Rhode Island (1-0, 0-0)

-- The sellout crowd of 50,750 at Kansas State’s Snyder Family Stadium was the third-largest ever to watch UMass play a game. The record of 53,190 was set last season at Texas Tech. In 2002, 51,221 watched UMass at NC State.

-- Massachusetts travelled with 19 players to Kansas State who had never played in a game at UMass, which included six true freshmen. Of those true freshmen Perry McIntyre saw action on the opening kickoff and all game long.

-- Tyler Holmes had his second career interception against Kansas State, second in as many games as the first came in the finale against Hofstra in 2008. He finished the game with a career-high 12 tackles - his second career double-figure tackling game.  CAA Football Rookie of the Week - D.J. Adeoba played in the first game of his career returning a blocked punt 26-yards for a touchdown. He finished the game with seven tackles.  Ke’Mon Bailey played his first UMass game at defensive back against the Wildcats when he forced a fumble and garnered a fumble recovery. He also had six tackles, three for loss.

#9/9 NEW HAMPSHIRE (1-0, 0-0 CAA)
This Week:  at Ball State (0-1)

-- QB R.J. Toman is no stranger to quarterback success.  The junior has followed in the footsteps of big names at the high school and collegiate level.  Prior to arriving in Durham, N.H., Toman was the successor to former USC signal-caller and current New York Jet rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez at Mission Viejo High School.  Prior to taking snaps full-time at New Hampshire in 2008, Toman learned from Ricky Santos, who ranks second all-time on the NCAA FCS career total offense yards list with 14,615 yards from 2004-07.  First on that NCAA list is the late Steve McNair.
