RICHMOND, Va. (January 7, 2010) -- After Villanova captured CAA Football’s second-straight and fourth NCAA Division I National Championship in seven seasons, the league logged an impressive number of 73 All-America honors as announced by several publications since the conclusion of the 2009 season.  Headlining the honorees as CAA Football’s only consensus First Team All-America selections are Richmond’s senior offensive lineman Matt McCracken and James Madison’s senior end Arthur Moats.

Moats, the league’s 2009 Defensive Player of the Year and only its second Buck Buchanan National Defensive Player of the Year winner, was among the league leaders in sacks, tackles for loss and defensive linemen tackles at the end of the 2009 season.  The Portsmouth, Va., native made 90 tackles in 11 games this season for a mark of 8.2 per game.  His 2.14 tackles for loss per game not only led the league, but also ranked as the best mark in the nation.  Moats trailed only William and Mary defensive end Adrian Tracy in the sack category after garnering 11 in 10 games this year.

McCracken, the first consensus All-America honoree at Richmond since 1992, was a three-time All-CAA Football honoree dating back to his sophomore season in 2007 season.  The Pittsburgh, Pa., native, was part of a Spider squad which finished the 2009 season with an 11-2 mark and was one of two CAA Football Conference Champions.  The Spiders’ offensive line, led by McCracken, allowed a league-low game average of just 1.38 sacks over 13 games in 2009.  Richmond’s offense also finished third in the league with a 29.9 point/game average this season.

The 20 total Sports Network All-America honorees out of CAA Football in 2009 bumps its total to 296 All-America winners since the 1987 season.

The league’s seven American Football Coaches Association All-Americans sets a new league record for the most in one season.  Prior to 2009 the league had not had more than five AFCA All-America picks in a season, which happened in 1988, 1991, 1994 and 2006.  CAA Football’s total of seven AFCA All-Americans in 2009 push the league’s total to 98 since the 1979 season, the most of any league at the FCS level.
