TIGER SWIMMING AND DIVING VISITS SEED SCHOOL
TOWSON, Md.
- Recently, the Tiger men's and women's swimming and diving teams
visited the SEED School of Maryland to begin a partnership between the
teams and 83 sixth grade students.
The SEED School is a
public boarding college preparatory school with students from across
the State of Maryland. Admission is selected by a lottery drawing of
applications from need-based families.
Students from SEED were
paired up with their "Tiger Pals" and spent an afternoon getting to know
each other. After starting the visit with an icebreaker game and some
small group activities, the SEED students gave well-guided and
informative tours of their campus and were very excited about showing
the team their campus.
A major highlight
of the tour was visiting the dorms, which encompass a unique setup. Each
dormitory floor has a designated college name/house and everyone agreed
the "Towson House" was their favorite.
The team also had
the opportunity to see the classrooms and meeting rooms that are
currently housed in trailers and the future academic buildings and
athletic complex that may even include a pool.
The SEED School of
Maryland is located on the grounds of what was formerly Southwestern
High School. The former high school is undergoing extensive renovation
to accommodate the students in this expanding charter school. The SEED
School currently includes grades six through eight and will be adding a
class each year until it serves students from grades 6-12. The 10-year
old SEED School of Washington D.C. has been featured on CBS' "60
Minutes" and NBC's "The Today Show" and is featured along with other
public charter schools in the recently released award winning
documentary "Waiting for Superman." 97 percent of SEED high school
graduates are accepted to four-year colleges and universities.
The
Tigers are looking forward to hosting the SEED School students on the
Towson campus on Wednesday, December 1. The SEED students will spend the
day living the life of a Towson student-athlete. The outreach program
is expected to grow during the Spring semester. It is our hope that
this outreach program will develop ongoing mentoring relationships
between the Towson Swimmers and Divers and the SEED students.
