TRIBE MEN'S GYMNASTICS SPONSORS LOCAL FOOD DRIVE
WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (Jan. 19, 2012) - The
William and Mary men's gymnastics program has a long tradition of excelling
athletically, academically and in the community. This year's team continued to
build upon that tradition by sponsoring its annual food drive, which collected
2,700 pounds of canned goods for the local FISH food bank.
"The canned
food drive is one of the ways in which our gymnasts try to give something back
to the community that has been so supportive in helping to make their time at
William and Mary so special," head coach Cliff Gauthier said. "It is quite rewarding
to see how many households step up to help in the community."
This year's
drive was conducted over a two-week span, as the team distributed flyers
throughout the Williamsburg area in early January before collecting the
donations last Sunday.
This winter marks
the fourth year that W&M has sponsored a food drive benefiting FISH. During
that span, the Tribe has collected more than 8,400 pounds of food for the
organization.
"The canned
food drive is always something our team looks forward to coming back from
winter break," senior Steve Deutsch said. "Not only is it a great opportunity
to help serve the Williamsburg community, but it's also a constructive team
bonding experience."
The FISH
volunteer food pantry serves hundreds of clients each month by providing
emergency food, clothing and transportation services.
