Tennis Honors - April 10
RICHMOND, Va. (April 10, 2012) -
The CAA has recognized six men's and women's tennis players for outstanding
performances during the week ending April 8.
Georgia State junior Victor Valente (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and
the VCU doubles team of sophomore Alexis
Heugas (Jurancon, France) and sophomore Antoine Baroz (Geneva, Switzerland) all earned CAA men's tennis
honors for the second week in a row. Receiving honors on the women's side were Georgia
State sophomore Abigail Tere-Apisah (Port
Moresby, Papua New Guinea) and the VCU doubles team of seniors Alex Bara (Oradea, Romania) and Ana Bara (Oradea, Romania).
Valente was selected as the CAA
men's tennis Player of the Week after helping lead 65th-ranked
Georgia State to a 5-2 victory over #37 UNCW last Sunday. Playing at No. 2
singles, the junior clinched the win with a 6-3, 0-6, 7-6 (7-3) triumph over
the Seahawks' Chris Cooprider. Valente, who was battling an injury, rallied
from a 4-2 deficit in the third set to improve his record to 15-3 in singles
this season.
Heugas and Baroz, who are ranked
#65 in the nation, were named the CAA men's Doubles Team of the Week after
upsetting 46th-ranked Luka Somen and Corrado Degl' Incerti Tocci of
Virginia Tech, 8-5. The victory helped the #42 Rams clinch the doubles point in
a narrow 4-3 road win over the #51 Hokies.
Tere-Apisah was chosen as the
CAA women's tennis Player of the Week after pulling out a dramatic victory at
No. 1 singles in Georgia State's 4-3 win at 37th-ranked South
Florida last Sunday. The sophomore, who is ranked #39 nationally, rallied for a
3-6, 6-3, 7-5 triumph over #41 Ecaterina Vasenina of USF. Tere-Apisah trailed
5-0 in the third set before winning seven straight games to improve her record
to 14-1 this season.
Bara and Bara were honored as
the CAA women's Doubles Team of the Week after going 2-0 at No. 1 doubles in
#48 VCU's victories over #37 South Florida (4-1) and Marquette (7-0). The
tandem upset the Bulls' 54th-ranked duo of Ecaterina Vasenina and
Loreto Alonso Martinez, 7-6, and then beat the Golden Eagles' Gillian Hush and
Olga Fischer, 8-6.
