CAA Statement On APR Report
The UNCW and Towson men's basketball teams were declared ineligible for postseason play in 2012-13 by the NCAA due to low Academic Progress Rate scores. Both institutions made appeals to the NCAA, which were denied.
CAA Commissioner Tom Yeager has issued the following statement regarding the APR penalties:
"Obviously we are very disappointed that Towson's and UNCW's men's basketball teams have been declared ineligible for the 2013 postseason due to subpar APR scores. All the institutions in the CAA invest considerable resources in the academic performance of our student athletes and take great pride in their resultant success. The CAA has always supported increasing the academic expectations for all student athletes and supports new NCAA academic initiatives. The small yearly academic sample that caused this ineligibility at Towson and UNCW does not reflect the historic academic performance of the men's basketball teams at either institution. Both institutions have made significant changes both in policies and personnel and I am confident that they will return to good standing in the next cycle".
