CAA Field Hockey Co-Player of the Week:
Jantien Gunter, So., Goalkeeper,  Drexel

Gunter is the program's first goalkeeper to post two shutouts in the opening weekend of play (dating back to 1983). Gunter made five saves to help the Dragons upset No. 5 Duke, 1-0, on Friday night in her debut for Drexel. She also made two saves to preserve the shutout in Sunday's 3-0 win over the Rider Broncs. She has seven saves on the season with a 1.0 saves percentage in 140 minutes of play.


CAA Field Hockey Co-Player of the Week:
Christine Johnson, Sr., Defender, William & Mary

Johnson had a very start to the year, tying the school record for goals in a game with four in the 5-1 win over Davidson. She is the seventh player in school history to record four goals in a single game, the first to do so since 2001. Johnson started both games on the weekend and helped the Tribe defense hold Appalachian State without even a single shot in the first half on Sunday.

 

CAA Field Hockey Rookie of the Week:
Deirdre Duke, Fr., Forward, Northeastern

In her first game on the pitch for Northeastern, Duke scored the winning goal for the Huskies in the 51st minute against No. 23 Louisville, recovering from on a nearly botched corner play. The freshman recorded three shots on the weekend for the Huskies, making an immediate impact in NU's offensive attack.


CAA QUICK HITS:

  • Four teams began the season 2-0 after the first weekned of play - Drexel, Hofstra, Northeastern, William & Mary
  • Hofstra's nine goals in the first two games equals the most by a Coach Kathy De Angelis' team (2005) and is second all-time by a Pride team (12 in 1952) in the first two games of the year.
  • William & Mary's 12 goals is the second-highest total after two games in school history. Only the 1974 squad has scored more in the first two games. THe Tribe are averaging six goals per game this sesaon.
  • Towson sophomore goalkeeper Tashani Dickinson has made 10 saves in the first two starts of her career combined.
  • Delaware freshman midfielder Michaela Patzner scored her first two goals of her collegiate career agaisnt Boston University on Friday. She leads the Blue Hens in goals scored this season.
  • Old Dominion sophomore Rosario Villagra's first career goal against American Sunday afternoon proved to be the game winner in a 2-1 victory for the Lady Monarchs.

Around the League:

Dragons Upset Blue Devils: #24 Drexel upset #5 Duke Friday night in Philadelphia. Meghan Plank scored the winning goal for the Dragons, while goalkeeper Jantien Gunter picked up the shutout victory. 

Huskies Take Down Ranked Pair: Northeastern began the season with victories over two ranked opponents at the Louisville Cardinal Classic. The huskies defeated #23 Louisville Friday evening (3-2) and #20 Northwestern Sunday afternoon (2-1). Senior forward Crystal Poland led NU with three goals and one assist.
