UNCW Wins 11th CAA Men's Track & Field Championship

HARRISONBURG, Va. (May 3, 2014) – UNCW claimed its 11th CAA Men’s Track and Field Championship, but first since 2009, on Saturday afternoon at JMU’s University Park.

The Seahawks, who had placed second for the past three years, finished with 265 points. Northeastern posted a best-ever second-place finish with 221 points and defending champion William & Mary was third with 151 points.

UNCW junior Cam Walton was chosen as the Most Outstanding Field Performer of the Meet after winning the long jump (23-10.25) and triple jump (49-9.25) and finishing second in the high jump (6-2.75). He was also third in the 100 meters and was a member of the Seahawks’ first-place 4X100 relay team.

Northeastern junior Stephen Sollowin was chosen as the Most Outstanding Track Performer of the Meet. He took home his second goal medal of the weekend by winning the 1,500 meters with a time of 3:57.75. He also was the champion in the 5,000 meters on Friday night with a time of 14:46.95.

Northeastern sophomore Donovan Henry had a pair of first-place finishes on the track, capturing the 400 meters in a time of 48.20 before coming back to win the 200 meters in a time of 21.53. It was the first time a Huskies’ runner had won either event at the CAA Championship.

UNCW swept the top five spots in the 110-meter high hurdles, with sophomore Matthew Foster finishing first in a time of 14.38 to beat out teammates Hezekiah Ward and Anthony Colon. The Seahawks also had four of the top five finishers in the 400 hurdles with junior Cody Love placing first in a time of 53.52.

UNCW took four of the top five places in the 100 meters, with freshman Brandon McLean claiming the gold in a time of 10.61. The Seahawks also took first place in the 800 meters as senior Dylan Skinner finished in a time of 1:50.46. It’s the third time in the last four years that a UNCW runner has claimed that event.

UNCW won the 4X100 relay for the second year in a row as the team of Johnathan Nixon, Cameron Shaw, Cam Walton and Brandon McLean posted a time of 41.49 to edge Northeastern by .08 seconds. The Seahawks turned in a dominant effort to win the 4x400 relay as Love, Jamar Collins-Hall, Trip Foreman and Ward crossed the line in 3:13.72.

W&M sophomore Taylor Frenia captured the shot put with a throw of 53-8.25, defeating NU’s Kevin Rosenberg by just over a foot. It’s the second straight year that a Tribe athlete has won the event. Frenia followed by taking home gold in the discus with a throw of 152-0.

The Tribe also got a first-place performance in the 3,000-meter steeplechase as sophomore Ryan Gousse turned in a time of 9:23:35 and edged teammate Jacob Sears by .51 seconds.

UNCW won the decathlon title for the first time since 2009 as freshman Caleb Mathis compiled 5,605 points over the two-day event.

Northeastern senior Jackson MacDonald was the CAA champion in the high jump, clearing the bar at 6-2.75.
