JMU, WM Advance to WSOC #CAAChamps Final

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (November 6, 2015) –  The 2015 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Women’s Soccer Championship semifinals at Hofstra Soccer Stadium had a little bit of everything as No. 2 William & Mary and No. 4 James Madison both advanced. The Tribe defeated No. 3 UNCW, 1-0, while the Dukes also picked up a 1-0 win over top-seeded Hofstra in double overtime.
 
The CAA Championship match between William & Mary and James Madison is set for Sunday, November 8 at 2:30 p.m. with an automatic berth to the NCAA Women’s Soccer College Cup up for grabs.The game will air live on the American Sports Network (ASN) and will be streamed live on CAA.tv. Fans can utilize any internet connected device to access live video and stats on  CAA.tv

#2 William & Mary 1, #3 UNCW 0 | Boxscore | Highlights
 
Second-seeded William & Mary clipped third-seeded UNCW, 1-0, in the CAA Women’s Soccer Championship semifinals. The Tribe, unbeaten in their last nine matches, will make its first appearance in the final since 2011.
 
The first half was a stalemate, despite UNCW (14-6-1) controlling much of the tempo, the teams went into the break scoreless.
 
It didn’t take long for William & Mary (14-3-2) to get on the board in the second half. Just 1:15 in, Katie Johnston headed home a corner kick by Nicole Baxter to put the Tribe ahead, 1-0.
 
William & Mary controlled the rest of the way while UNCW’s Carolyn Huddy came up with some big saves to keep it a one-goal contest.
 
Huddy finished with three saves while William & Mary’s Caroline Casey, the CAA Defender of the Year, had two stops in her tenth shutout of the season. The CAA’s leading offense with 48 goals, UNCW was shut out for just the third time this season. Two of the three shutouts have come against William & Mary.
 
William & Mary outshot UNCW by a 13-7 margin and held a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks.

Junior Ashley Herndon scored in double overtime to lift fourth-seeded James Madison to a 1-0 victory over top-seeded Hofstra in the CAA Women’s Soccer Championship semifinals. The Dukes return to the final for the first time since 2013.
 
The Dukes (13-6-2) weathered an offensive attack by the Pride (13-5-1) which out-shot JMU, 31-9. Goalie Ellen Forrest posted her tenth clean sheet of the season with a career-high 16 saves for the Dukes.
 
Hofstra out-shot JMU, 13-3, in the first half but Forrest stood tall, making six saves, and kept the game scoreless into the break. In the second half, Hofstra continued its dominant offensive attack, out-shooting JMU, 16-4, but Forrest rose to the challenge and made impressive save after impressive save.
 
Neither team was able to break through during the first overtime period and went to double overtime. In the 104th minute, Herndon headed home a cross from Jennie Sroba to give the Dukes the victory.
 
In addition to out-shooting JMU, Hofstra held a 7-0 advantage in corners. Four Hofstra players recorded at least two shots on goal with three-time CAA Player of the Year Leah Galton taking 11 shots, including five on target. Friederike Mehring had three saves for the Pride.

Herndon's goal was her second-straight overtime game-winner in the CAA Championship after her tally defeated Northeastern in the quarterfinals. Herndon has scored 12 goals this season, eight of which have been game-winners.
