HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (November 8, 2015) – Fourth-seeded James Madison University scored three goals in the second half to upset second-seeded William & Mary, 3-2, and capture the 2015 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Women’s Soccer Championship at Hofstra Soccer Stadium.The Dukes are the first team in the 21-year history of the CAA women's soccer championship to overcome a 2-0 deficit to win.
It is the fourth title for James Madison (14-6-2) and their first since 2010. The Dukes will receive an automatic berth in the NCAA Championship tournament.
William & Mary (14-4-2) controlled much of the play in the first half, out-shooting James Madison, 9-1. The Tribe took 1-0 lead at the 15:12 mark as rookie
Mackenzie Kober headed home a corner kick by
Nicole Baxter. William & Mary added another goal in the 39th minute as
Rachel Moore booted in a touch pass from
Leci Irvin.
James Madison didn’t waste any time getting on the board in the second half. Just 1:38 in,
Ashley Herndon tapped in her 13th goal of the season to pull the Dukes within 2-1. With 15:12 left in the game,
Allie Bunner crossed a pass from the right corner onto the foot of Herndon who blasted one past a diving
Caroline Casey to tie the game, 2-2, with her second goal of the game.
With 5:16 left in regulation, the Dukes took a 3-2 lead on as Bunner finished on a cross from
Sydney Braun-McLeod. James Madison held on the rest of the away to come away with the title.
William & Mary out-shot James Madison, 17-8. Casey made two saves for the Tribe while
Ellen Forrest was strong once more, making five saves for the Dukes. JMU had a 4-1 advantage in corners, with all of theirs coming in the second half.
