CofC's Barry Earns Academic All-America Honors
Rob Washburn
AUSTIN, Texas – College of Charleston’s Canyon Barry (Colorado Springs, Colo.) has been named to the Capital One Academic All-America® Men’s Basketball Division I Second Team as selected and announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on Thursday.
Barry, a 6-foot-6 sophomore guard, holds an impressive 4.0 grade-point average at The College majoring in physics and minoring in mathematics and computer science. He was the lone member of the 16-member national first, second and third teams with a perfect GPA. Barry becomes only the second men’s basketball player in school history to be named an Academic All-American next to Jody Lumpkin in 1999 (second team) and 2000 (first team).
He is one of 12 all-time CofC honorees to be selected on 18 occasions including three-time Academic All-Americans Joey Foxhall (1997-99) and Philip Coker (2004-06), both members of the baseball team. Barry, who is averaging a team-leading 12.4 points per game for the Cougars, follows in the footsteps of his mother, Lynn (Norenberg) Barry, a first-team women’s basketball Academic All-American in 1980 and 1981 at William & Mary. The elder Barry was inducted into the Academic All-America Hall of Fame in 2001, while the younger Barry is currently a member of the CofC Honors College.
Barry was joined on the second team by North Carolina’s Marcus Paige, Butler’s Alex Barlow, Louisville’s Wayne Blackshear and Alabama’s Levi Randolph. He was one of only two underclassmen to be honored next to Washington’s Nigel Williams-Goss, who was selected to the third team.
