MT. PLEASANT, S.C. (May 21, 2015) – Senior pitcher Adam Davis tossed a complete game and allowed just five hits to help fifth-seeded Delaware defeat sixth-seeded William & Mary, 3-1, in Game 3 of the 2015 CAA Baseball Championship at The Ballpark at Patriots Point on Thursday afternoon.

The Blue Hens improved to 24-23 on the year and survive to play tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. against an opponent yet to be determined. The right-handed Davis moved to 6-3 with the win, striking out six and walking two without allowing a run.

UD redshirt freshman Diaz Nardo had a hit, one run and two walks while seniors Greg Olenski and Brock Niggebrugge each drove in one run in the victory. Olenski recorded two of his team’s six hits as well.

The Tribe, who opened the tournament on Thursday morning with a tough walk-off loss to Northeastern, concludes their season with a 22-30 record. Sophomore Nick Brown (5-4) lasted eight frames and gave up two earned runs on six hits to go with three walks. Junior outfielder Josh Smith drove in William & Mary’s lone run with a two-out triple in the seventh inning.

After four frames, both teams had two hits apiece but failed to find the scoreboard.

UD finally struck in the bottom of the fifth. Nardo led off with a double to left and moved to third on a wild pitch. He scored with one down thanks to a sacrifice fly from Niggebrugge.

The Hens added another run in the frame to make it 2-0. Joe Giacchino doubled down the right field line and scored following a Tribe throwing error on Zach Lopes’ grounder up the middle.

The Tribe managed to get one back in the seventh. Devin White struck out to open the frame, but reached first safely after hustling down the line on a passed ball. After a strikeout and a fly out, Smith poked a triple through the gap in right-center to bring the Tribe within 2-1.

UD added an insurance run in the eighth after senior Norm Donkin opened the inning with a triple and scored on Olenski’s single to left.
