Drexel seniors Joel Berryman and David Sanchez helped the Dragons finish second as a team at the 2016 CAA men’s Swimming and Diving Championships, which is even more impressive considering that it was the best finish for the program all-time.

Berryman, a native of New Zealand, came home from the championships with three individual titles. The senior was named Men’s Most Outstanding Swimmer of the Meet, capturing gold in the 50 free, 100 free (new championship record, 43.56) and the 100 back.

For Sanchez, this year’s championships, at least on paper, looked even harder considering he was the favorite on both boards yet again. Still, the senior came away with his third career Most Outstanding Diver of the Meet honors, winning the men’s 1-meter board for the first time in his career, and then earning a second-place finish on the men’s 3-meter board (355.50).

After the season concluded, the two Dragons continued to make even more history. Berryman became DU”s first-ever CAA Men’s Swimmer of the Year award winner, while Sanchez became just the second student-athlete in conference history to win Men’s Diver of the Year honors three times in his career. Sanchez ended his career with three CAA Championship gold medals and four major diving awards – three Men’s Diver of the Year honors and one Rookie Diver of the Year trophy.

Not to be overlooked, William & Mary once again grabbed the men’s team title at the championships for the second straight year. Impressive, to say the least, considering the Tribe do not have a diving team. The Green and Gold men trailed just once in the team standings – after Thursday’s relays - over the four-day meet and collected a new CAA Championship-high 969.50 total points. Senior Jeremiah O’Donnell tied with Berryman for the individual lead with 60 points, winning three gold medals for the second consecutive season. Championship highlights can be found here
