HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (November 5, 2017) – Top-seeded Hofstra University captured its first Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Women's Soccer in five years by clipping third-seeded Northeastern University, 2-1, at Hofstra Soccer Stadium. The Pride, which has won 12 straight contests and is unbeaten in their last 14 matches, receives an automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament
Hofstra (15-3-2; 9-0-0 CAA) got off to a dream start, scoring just 1:24 into the contest on a goal by rookie
Lucy Porter, her fourth of the season. Northeastern (13-5-3) tied it up at 15:13 as
Kerri Zerfoss headed in a feed from
Valentina Soares Gache.
With just under 14 minutes remaining in the half, a recently subbed in
Jenn Buoncore put the Pride on top, 2-1, heading in a free kick by
Monique Iannella. The score would hold at halftime.
Hofstra controlled play at the start of the second half. NU, however, had a great chance on a free kick midway through the half but the shot sailed just high. The Huskies pressed in the final minutes but the Pride was able to hold them off for the title.
This is the fourth CAA Championship title for Hofstra. The Pride also took home crowns in 2005, 2007 and 2012.
Hofstra learns their postseason fate during the NCAA Selection Show on November 6 at 4:30 p.m. on NCAA.com
