NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (March 4, 2017) – Freshman Zane Martin led four Tigers in double-figures with 17 points on 7-of-10 shooting, and third-seeded Towson picked up a convincing 82-54 win versus sixth-seeded Northeastern in the final game of Day 2 at the 2017 CAA Men’s Basketball Championship.
The Tigers (20-12) avenged a quarterfinal loss to the Huskies a year ago with the win, their 12th in the last 15 games. Junior Brian Starr and senior William Adala Moto both registered 12 points, with Adala Moto adding five rebounds and five assists. Martin’s efficient performance was that much more impressive considering he did not attempt a shot in the entire first half.

Towson advances to the championship semifinals for the first time since 2014 and meets second-seeded College of Charleston at 4:30 on Sunday afternoon. TU and CofC split the series during the regular season, with each team winning on their own home court.

Northeastern ends its season with a 15-16 record. Senior T.J. Williams, who on Thursday was named 2017 CAA Player of the Year, finished with 15 points in his final game for the Huskies. Freshman Bolden Brace chipped in 10 points, and graduate student Alex Murphy had eight in the loss.

Towson shot 53.8% from the floor, including 7-of-15 from 3-point range, and had a commanding 43-28 advantage on the glass. The Tigers were also stellar defensively, limiting NU to just 27.5% shooting, including 5-of-25 from beyond the arc.

The Tigers had a balanced effort in the first 20 minutes of play, with seven different scorers contributing to a 37-23 lead. NU made just five field goals as a team and turned the ball over seven times, while Williams and Murphy accounted for 17 of the Huskies’ points.

Northeastern got within 14 points at the 7:26 mark of the second half, thanks to a 9-0 run, but that was the closest the Huskies made it for the remainder of the contest.

Notes: Following the Tigers' loss at Northeastern at the end of January, Towson went on a six-game win streak and won 11 of 12 games during that same stretch. Nine different Tigers found the scoreboard in the victory.
