UNCW's Golden Headlines All-CAA Baseball Team

RICHMOND, Va. (May 23, 2017) – UNCW senior outfielder Casey Golden was selected as the 2017 CAA baseball Player of the Year, while Seahawks’ sophomore right-hander Alex Royalty received CAA Pitcher of the Year accolades as the conference announced its post-season award winners on Tuesday.
Other top honors went to Elon freshman pitcher Kyle Brnovich as CAA Rookie of the Year, Northeastern junior shortstop Max Burt as CAA Defensive Player of the Year and Northeastern’s Mike Glavine as CAA Coach of the Year.
Golden capped an excellent career with a standout senior season. The UNCW outfielder batted .306 and led the conference with 18 home runs and a .622 slugging percentage. He also contributed 12 doubles and 36 RBI’s while ranking third in the league with 50 runs scored. Golden currently ranks third on UNCW’s career homers list (37), seventh in hits (235) and runs scored (161), and 10th in doubles (48) and RBI’s (141). He’s the sixth different Seahawk to receive the Bill Brooks Player of the Year award.
Royalty is UNCW’s fourth CAA Pitcher of the Year honoree in the past five seasons, joining Mat Batts (2013-14) and Ryan Foster (2016). The Seahawks’ right-hander led the league in victories with an 8-2 record, including a 5-1 mark in CAA play. He tied for the conference lead in strikeouts with 98, issued just 24 walks and ranked sixth in the league with a 3.38 ERA. Opponents batted only .245 against Royalty, who threw a CAA-high 90.2 innings over 14 starts.
Brnovich is Elon’s first CAA Rookie of the Year and only the second pitcher in the past seven seasons to be chosen as the league’s top freshman. The Phoenix right-hander went 6-4, with five wins coming in conference play, and ranked second in the league with a 3.13 ERA. He limited opponents to a .192 batting average, which was the best in the CAA, and was tied for third in the conference with 96 strikeouts in 83.1 innings.
Burt is Northeastern’s second straight CAA Defensive Player of the Year honoree, joining catcher Josh Treff in 2016. The junior shortstop had a sparkling .960 fielding percentage with only 10 errors in 253 chances. He led the conference with 158 assists and was also involved in a league-best 44 double plays. His performance helped the Huskies lead the CAA in fielding percentage as a team (.976). Burt also batted .310 with a team-high 16 doubles and 29 RBI’s.
Glavine received his first CAA Coach of the Year award after guiding Northeastern to a 28-23 overall record and its first CAA regular-season title with a 16-7 mark. The Huskies captured six of their eight conference series and closed the regular-season on a six-game winning streak, which matched their longest of the year.
UNCW placed a league-high four players on the All-CAA first team. Golden and Royalty were joined by sophomore catcher Ryan Jeffers (.313, 10 HR, 32 RBI’s) and junior designated hitter Nick Feight (.299, 14 HR, 46 RBI’s). Delaware had three first-team honorees with sophomore first baseman Nick Patten (.306, 13 HR, 45 RBI’s), senior outfielder Jordan Glover (.331, 10 HR, 44 RBI’s), and senior relief pitcher Burk FitzPatrick (2-0, 5 saves, 3.24 ERA).
Elon’s Brnovich was joined by sophomore shortstop Ryne Ogren (.358, 4 HR, 33 RBI’s), while College of Charleston had junior third baseman Tommy Richter (.362, 1 HR, 24 RBI’s) and sophomore outfielder Logan McRae (.322, 15 HR, 58 RBI’s) make the squad. Rounding out the first team were William & Mary junior second baseman Cullen Large (.344, 6 HR, 38 RBI’s), and Hofstra junior outfielder/pitcher Teddy Cillis (.280, 6 HR, 27 RBI’s/96 K’s pitching).
The 2017 CAA Baseball Championship gets underway on Wednesday from UNCW’s Brooks Field in Wilmington, N.C.  Six teams will battle for the league title and an automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament.
