CAA Announces Men's Soccer Accolades
RICHMOND, Va. (November 2, 2018) – UNCW junior
Phillip Goodrum was named the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Player of the Year, headlining the conference’s postseason awards. Hofstra’s
Sean Nealis was selected the CAA Defensive Player of the Year, while Delaware’s
Timo Hummrich was voted the CAA Rookie of the Year. After leading James Madison to the CAA regular season title, head coach
Paul Zazenski was tabbed the CAA Coach of the Year by his peers.
Goodrum, an All-CAA First Team selection, paced the CAA with 12 goals and 28 points in the regular-season, good for a tie for eighth and 10
th in the NCAA, respectively. The junior tallied four multi-point games in 18 matches, including three two-goal performances. Goodrum is the first UNCW student-athlete since
Devan Carroll in 2008 to be named CAA Player of the Year.
Nealis led a Hofstra defense that boats 10 shutouts in 18 matches. From Sept. 6-Oct.6, Hofstra owned an eight-match shutout streak, at the time the best active streak in the country. Nealis played 1,593 of Hofstra’s 1,693 minutes in the regular season, adding a goal and three assists from his central defender position. Nealis joins Hofstra’s
Madeline Anderson in giving the Pride a sweep of the CAA’s Defensive Player of the Year honors.
Hummrich became Delaware’s first rookie of the year pick since 2013, leading the Blue Hens with four goals. The freshman was a three-time CAA Rookie of the Week selection, including after a two-goal effort against Charleston on Sept. 22. Hummrich’s four goals in CAA play tied for second, trailing only Goodrum’s six.
Elevated to James Madison’s head coaching position on Aug. 4, Zazenski led the Dukes to the program’s second straight CAA regular-season title after a 6-2-0 conference record and 11-4-2 overall mark. On Oct. 22, James Madison earned a No. 25 ranking in the United Soccer Coaches poll, the first appearance for the Dukes in the top 25 since the end of the 2011 season. The Dukes’ defense allowed just four goals in CAA play and nine across 17 matches.
James Madison had nine all-CAA honorees, including two first team selections in midfielder
Yannick Franz (0 g, 2 a) and redshirt-sophomore goalkeeper
TJ Bush (0.51 gaa, 10 sho), who sits tied for second nationally in shutouts. The Dukes will host the CAA Men’s Soccer Championship for the second straight year.
UNCW, which is ranked No. 13 in the United Soccer Coaches poll, will be the No. 2 seed for the CAA Championship. Goodrum led four first-team picks for the Seahawks, which had nine players selected to all-CAA teams. Goodrum was joined on the first team by sophomore forward
Emil Elveroth (11 g, 27 pts), midfielder
Joel Bylander (3 a, 3 pts) and defender
Mark Lindstrom.
Hofstra, the No. 3 seed for the championship, placed six players onto the all-CAA teams with Nealis being the lone representative on the first team.
Led by Hummrich, four Delaware student-athletes were selected to all-CAA teams. The Blue Hens will be the No. 4 seed at the CAA Championship.
William & Mary, the defending conference champion, was led by midfielder
Antonio Bustamante (4 g, 15 pts) and forward
Ryder Bell (5 g, 12 pts) on the first team. The first team accolade was the third of Bustamante’s career and second for Bell. In total, the Tribe placed six players onto all-CAA teams.
Northeastern, which is making its first championship appearance since 2014, had four players voted onto all-CAA teams, led by second-team selections for
Harry Swartz (1 g, 2 a) and
Martin Nygaard (2 g, 2 a).
Drexel midfielder
Mathias Ebbesen (8 g, 3 a) and Elon defender
Luke Matthews (1 g, 1 a) rounded out the All-CAA First Team.
The 2018 CAA Men’s Soccer Championship kicks off with first round matches on Saturday, Nov. 3, with two matches at 7 p.m. ET. In Hempstead, N.Y., No. 3 Hofstra will welcome No. 6 Northeastern, with the winner advancing to play No. 2 UNCW.
