CAA FOOTBALL WEEKLY RELEASE (pdf format)

RICHMOND, Va. (October 8, 2018) – CAA Football has announced its weekly award winners for Week 6 of the 2018 season. Earning honors are Elon senior running back Malcolm Summers, Maine sophomore linebacker Deshawn Stevens, Maine sophomore place kicker Kenny Doan, Towson junior kick returner/running back Shane Simpson and Elon freshman linebacker Zack Monson.

Malcolm Summers, Sr., RB, Elon (Mebane, N.C./Alamance)

Summers rushed for a season-high 186 yards and a TD on 20 carries as No. 9 Elon defeated No. 2 James Madison, 27-24, ending the Dukes’ 20-game conference win streak and 19-game home win streak. The senior running back broke loose for a career-long 59-yard scoring run early in the fourth quarter that gave the Phoenix a 20-12 lead. It was the third consecutive 100-yard rushing game for Summers and came against a Dukes’ defense that was giving up only 78.6 ypg on the ground, which ranked 7th in FCS.

Deshawn Stevens, So., LB, Maine (Toronto, Ontario/Kent School)

Stevens recorded a team-high eight tackles, a career-best 2.5 TFL and a career-high 2.0 sacks to help No. 25 Maine edge No. 19 Villanova, 13-10. The sophomore linebacker was part of a dominant effort by the Black Bears’ defense, which held Villanova to just 181 total yards. Stevens has made at least eight tackles in four of his five contests.

Doak booted a game-winning 52-yard field goal as time expired, lifting No. 25 Maine to a 13-10 victory over No. 19 Villanova. The field goal tied a school record that was set in 1975 and shattered his previous career-best of 38 yards. Doak also connected on a 30-yard field goal in the second quarter.

Shane Simpson, Jr., KR/PR/RB, Towson (Easton, Pa./Easton)

Simpson returned the opening kickoff 96 yards for a touchdown to provide the momentum in No. 23 Towson’s 52-28 win over No. 13 Stony Brook. It was the Tigers’ first kickoff return for a TD since 2016. Simpson finished the game with 204 all-purpose yards, averaging 39.3 yards on four kickoff returns and also adding an 8-yard TD run in the first quarter.

CAA Football Rookie of the Week
Zack Monson, Fr., LB, Elon (Alexandria, Va./West Potomac)

Making his first career start, Monson recorded a career and team-high 12 tackles, 2.0 TFL and 1.5 sacks in No. 9 Elon’s 27-24 triumph at No. 2 James Madison. The freshman linebacker was part of a Phoenix defense that limited the Dukes to 103 rushing yards and recorded five sacks. Monson entered the game with just five tackles all season.
