HARRISONBURG, Va. (November 3, 2018) –
Behind a dominating defensive effort, Hofstra earned its second consecutive Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) women’s soccer championship, shutting out James Madison, 2-0, at Sentara Park.

Hofstra (15-5-1) did not allow a goal in all three of its CAA Women’s Soccer Championship matches, holding top-seeded James Madison (11-8-1) to two shots on goal. The Pride is the first CAA team since William & Mary in 2003 to win three games in the championship all by shutouts.

Keying the Hofstra defense, Madeline Anderson was named the championship’s Most Outstanding Player. Anderson was previously voted the two-time CAA Defensive Player of the Year in 2017 and 2018.

The CAA title was Hofstra’s fifth as a CAA member, with the Pride becoming the first CAA program to capture back-to-back women’s soccer championships since Northeastern in 2013 and 2014.

As it had in its previous two CAA Championship games, Hofstra struck first in the match. After a foul just outside the box gave the Pride a free kick in the 14th minute, Miri Taylor drove a low kick into the wall, where it deflected to Bella Richards. Richards’ attempt was blocked and landed at Lucy Porter’s feet, where the sophomore’s strike off the outside of her right foot found the left side of the net.

The goal was Porter’s 10th of the season and second in the 2018 CAA Championship.

Just over 11 minutes into the second half, Hofstra extended its lead to 2-0. Hannah McShea was able to make a diving save to her left to deny Jenn Buoncore’s low blast, but the deflection caromed into the path of Sabrina Bryan, who converted into the open net for her 11th goal of the season.

With the two-goal lead, Hofstra’s defense clamped down, recording its fourth consecutive shutout and ninth of the season.

Hofstra will find out its postseason destination during the NCAA Women’s Soccer Championship Selection Show at 4:30 p.m. ET on Monday, Nov. 5, on NCAA.com.
