JMU Opens WNIT with Win

James Madison picked up a WNIT home win for the second straight season while Northeastern suffered a tough loss in the WBI to open postseason play.

Lexie Barrier poured in a career-high 27 points and James Madison withstood ETSU’s fourth-quarter push to open the Women’s National Invitation Tournament (WNIT) with a 60-52 victory Thursday night at the JMU Convocation Center. Barrier’s 27 points were the most this season by a JMU player. Her night included 11 points in the fourth quarter and nine in the opening period. Redshirt-sophomore center
Kayla Cooper-Williams added nine points, 10 rebounds and three blocks. JMU improved to 22-10 overall and will host Radford in the second round of the WNIT on Saturday night at 7 p.m.

Northeastern came on strong in the second half but the comeback fell short as Yale pulled out a 68-58 victory at the Cabot Center to open the Women’s Basketball Invitational. Northeastern finishes the season at 16-15. Junior
