RICHMOND, Va. (October 28, 2019) – CAA Football has announced its weekly award winners for Week 9 of the 2019 season. Earning honors are Stony Brook junior quarterback Tyquell Fields, Elon senior defensive back Greg Liggs, Jr., Richmond redshirt freshman kick returner/running back Aaron Dykes and Stony Brook redshirt freshman running back Ty Son Lawton.
CAA Football Offensive Player of the Week
Tyquell Fields, Jr., QB, Stony Brook (Yonkers, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac)
Fields accounted for 332 yards of total offense and three touchdowns as Stony Brook rallied past No. 5 Villanova, 36-35. The junior quarterback completed 21-of-37 passes for a career-high 320 yards and a TD and also ran for a pair of scores. Fields helped SBU tally 16 points in the final 4:45, throwing a 10-yard TD pass to Shawn Harris, scoring on a 1-yard run and then driving the Seawolves 59 yards in 21 seconds to set up a game-winning field goal as time expired.
CAA Football Defensive Player of the Week
Greg Liggs, Jr., Sr., DB, Elon (Greensboro, N.C./Southeast Guilford)
Liggs tied his own Elon record with three interceptions in a 38-13 win at Rhode Island. The senior’s second pickoff was returned 31 yards to the 3-yard line, setting up a TD that gave the Phoenix a 24-13 lead. Elon held URI’s 5
th-ranked passing offense to a season-low 211 yards. It was the second time this month that Liggs has had three interceptions in a game, and his seven pickoffs for the season are an Elon record and the most in FCS. He also owns Elon’s career interception mark with 14.
CAA Football Special Teams Player of the Week
Aaron Dykes, R-Fr., KR/RB, Richmond (Knoxville, Tenn./Hardin Valley)
Dykes became the first player in Richmond history to return two kickoffs for touchdowns in a game as the Spiders knocked off No. 19 Delaware, 35-25. He had a 100-yard return in the first quarter and then followed with an 88-yard return in the second that gave UR a 28-10 lead. The two KOR’s for TD’s tied a FCS and CAA record and his 226 return yards for the game set a new Spiders’ mark and is the 3
rd-highest total in FCS this season.
CAA Football Rookie of the Week
Ty Son Lawton, R-Fr., RB, Stony Brook (Staten Island, N.Y./Curtis)
Lawton rushed for a team-high 121 yards and a touchdown on 25 carries in Stony Brook’s 36-35 victory at No. 5 Villanova. It was the third consecutive 100-yard effort for Lawton and came against a VU defense that was allowing just 99.4 ypg on the ground. He had a 10-yard TD run in the 3rd quarter and broke loose for a key 47-yard run late in the 4
th period that set up another TD.
