CAA Women's Soccer Awards Revealed
Bill Potter
RICHMOND, Va. (October 31, 2019) – Entering the postseason on a 13-match unbeaten streak, Hofstra collected five individual awards in the revamped Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) women’s soccer postseason accolades, as
Sabrina Bryan was named the CAA Attacking Player of the Year,
Lucy Porter the CAA Midfielder of the year,
Anja Suttner the Defensive Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year and
Simon Riddiough was tabbed the CAA Coach of the Year by his peers. Additionally, Delaware’s
Olivia Schuck joined Suttner as the CAA Defensive Player of the Year and UNCW’s
Sydney Schneider was voted the CAA Goalkeeper of the Year.
Bryan, an All-CAA First Team selection, is part of a multi-faceted Hofstra attack that has three Pride players leading the CAA in scoring. In 18 games, Bryan has netted seven goals and added eight assists; with 22 points, Bryan is third in the CAA behind teammates Lucy Porter and Miri Taylor, both of whom joined Bryan on the All-CAA First Team.
Porter, a 2018 first team selection, has paced the CAA in scoring from the midfield, recording 14 goals and seven assists. Porter’s 35 points are 10 more than any other player in the CAA. A MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List candidate, Porter’s 35 points are fifth in the NCAA, while her 14 goals rank eighth. The CAA Preseason Midfielder of the Year, Porter has been named the CAA Offensive Player of the Week three times this season.
Suttner extended Hosftra’s streak of having the CAA Defensive Player of the Year to three, joining
Madeline Anderson (2017-18). Additionally, Suttner gave the Pride its second straight CAA Rookie of the Year (
Miri Taylor). The German has keyed a back line that allowed just nine goals in nine CAA matches in posting an unbeaten 7-0-2 mark.
Delaware’s Schuck joined Suttner as the CAA Defensive Player of the Year after leading the Blue Hens to its best regular-season finish in program history, taking second in the CAA at 7-2. Schuck has been part of a Delaware effort that has allowed just 15 goals in 21 matches this season, including nine shutouts entering the CAA Women’s Soccer Championship.
After recording five shutouts, all in conference play, Schneider was voted the CAA Goalkeeper of the Year. In nine conference matches, Schneider allowed just seven goals, helping UNCW set a program record with a shutout streak spanning 507:15 during CAA play. Entering the CAA Women’s Soccer Championship, Schneider holds a 0.94 goals-against-average.
For the third time in his career, Riddiough was voted the CAA Coach of the Year by his peers. Hofstra captured its second CAA regular-season title in the last three seasons, going unbeaten in conference play (7-0-2) for the second time in the last three years as well. At 13-3-2, the Pride is earning votes in the United Soccer Coaches top 25 and owns one of the longest active unbeaten streak in the country at 13 matches.
Eight different Pride players were named to all-CAA teams, including Bryan, Porter, Suttner and
Miri Taylor, all of whom were named to All-CAA First Team.
Schuck was joined by teammate Sara D’Appolonia on the first team, while Schneider teamed with Baley Edwards to put two Seahawks on the first team.
Elon’s Hannah Doherty became just the second Phoenix player to be named All-CAA First Team, while Northeastern defender Julianne Ross was named to the first team for the third straight year. James Madison’s Ebony Wiseman rounded out the All-CAA First Team selections.
The 2019 CAA Women’s Soccer Championship kicks off with first round matches on Friday, Nov. 1, with two matches at 1 p.m. ET. In Hempstead, N.Y., No. 4-seed Northeastern will take on No. 5 Elon, with the winner advancing to play top-seeded Hofstra on Sunday, Nov. 3. Third-seeded UNCW will meet No. 6 James Madison in Newark, Del., with the victor moving on to face No. 2 Delaware on Sunday. Both semifinal matches will also kick off at 1 p.m. ET.
The semifinal winners will meet on Saturday, Nov. 9, with the highest remaining seed hosting the match. All five matches will be available on FloSports, which is available on computers and on mobile devices as well as Roku, AppleTV, Amazon Fire and other OTT platforms.
