Elon Wins First CAA Title; Kemei Captures Individual Title

NEW MARKET, Va. (Nov. 2, 2019) – The Elon University women’s cross country team captured its first CAA title in program history, while Scolasticah Kemei became the second consecutive Phoenix runner to win the individual title at New Market Battlefield on Saturday morning.
Elon scored 41 points to take gold, while Delaware was the runner-up with 62 points. William & Mary and James Madison followed with 68 and 127 points respectively. Towson, Northeastern, College of Charleston, Hofstra and UNCW rounded out the scoring.
Led by Kemei, Elon placed three runners in the top five and four runners in the top 11. Kemei, the meet’s most outstanding performer, posted a time of 20:23.7 to take the race, just 23 seconds off the CAA record pace. She is the second consecutive Elon runner to take the CAA title after Coralea Geraniotis did so last year. Melissa Anastasakis placed third with a time of 20:46.7 and Maria Ahm took fifth with a time of 20:51. Hannah Preeo also earned All-CAA honors.
Delaware was the runner-up with 62 points, its highest finish at the CAA Championships in program history. Mackenzie Jones led the Blue Hens, placing fourth with a time of 20:46.9. Also, earning All-CAA honors for the Blue Hens were Roxanne Ramirez and Abby Bolt.
William & Mary, trying to defend its title from last season, placed third with 68 points. It was the Tribe’s lowest finish since 1995 when they finished third. The Tribe tied Elon with four athletes earning All-CAA honors. Emma Rogers and Olivia Paxton paced the Tribe, placing seventh and eighth, respectively. Charlotte Kowalk took 10
th, while Lauren Finikiotis placed 12
th.
Towson, despite placing fifth with 132, saw Olivia Janke place second overall with a time of 20:41.5.
