CAA Announces Men's Soccer Postseason Honors
Bill Potter
RICHMOND, Va. (November 7, 2019) – James Madison senior
Manuel Ferriol was named the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Player of the Year, headlining the conference’s postseason awards. UNCW’s
Danny Reynolds was selected the CAA Defensive Player of the Year, while Northeastern’s
Timothy Ennin was voted the CAA Rookie of the Year. After leading UNCW to the outright CAA regular season title, head coach
Aidan Heaney was tabbed the CAA Coach of the Year by his peers.
Ferriol, an All-CAA First Team selection and MAC Hermann Trophy Award candidate, leads the CAA with both 15 goals and 36 points. Ferriol’s 15 goals match the James Madison single-season record, while he has already reset the points record. The senior has recorded six multi-point games in 18 matches, including a hat trick on Sept. 21. Ferriol is the first JMU student-athlete since CJ Sapong in 2010 to be named CAA Player of the Year.
Reynolds keyed a UNCW defense that has allowed just seven goals in CAA play, leading the Seahawks to the first unbeaten conference record in the CAA since 2009. UNCW’s 17 goals allowed in 17 matches leads the CAA, as do the Seahawks eight shutouts. Second on the team with 11 points (3g, 5a), Reynolds joins Indy Smith (2008) and Jacob VanCompernolle (2014) as Seahawks to be named CAA Defensive Player of the Year.
Ennin becomes Northeastern’s first rookie of the year selection since Frantzdy Pierrot in 2014, recording nearly a point per game for the Huskies. A redshirt freshman, Ennin leads Northeastern with 15 points and six goals, ranking fifth in the CAA in both categories. Ennin boasts three game-winning goals for the Huskies this season in addition to two multi-point performances in CAA play.
For the fifth time in his 19 seasons at UNCW, Heaney was voted the CAA Coach of the Year by his peers. In 2019, Heaney guided UNCW to the first unbeaten regular season in the CAA since 2009 as the Seahawks went 7-0-1 in conference play. UNCW will enter the CAA Men’s Soccer Championship on an eight-game unbeaten run, while earning the program’s first outright CAA regular-season title since 2009. The Seahawks’ plus-13 goal differential is second in the CAA, with the team’s 0.96 goals against average pacing the conference.
Both UNCW and James Madison had eight all-CAA honorees, with the Seahawks placing five players onto the first team and the Dukes four. Reynolds was joined by his teammate on defense,
Mark Lindstrom, who earned first team honors for the second straight season. For the third straight season,
Phillip Goodrum was a first team selection after a regular season in which he posted 10 goals and 24 points. Midfielders
Gabriel Cabral and
Jacob Evans also earned first team nods, rounding out the UNCW quintet on the first team.
For the second straight year, JMU’s
TJ Bush was selected as the first team goalkeeper after tallying a 0.96 goals against average. Joining Ferriol among JMU’s first team midfielders was
Fernando Casero, who earned second team honors in 2018.
Thomas Judge, who has anchored a JMU defense that allowed just 18 goals this season, was named to the first team for the first time in his career.
Rounding out the All-CAA First Team were two forwards – Drexel’s Chris Donovan and Hofstra’s Matthew Vowinkel. In his sophomore season, Donovan’s team-leading seven goals more than doubled his output from his freshman season and ranked fourth in the CAA. Vowinkel’s 12 goals are the most for a Hofstra player since 2005; over his last three matches, Vowinkel has tallied eight goals, including two hat tricks.
The 2019 CAA Men’s Soccer Championship kicks off with first round matches on Friday, Nov. 8, with two matches at 1 p.m. ET. In Wilmington, N.C., No. 4-seed William & Mary will take on No. 5 Northeastern, with the winner advancing to play top-seeded UNCW on Sunday, Nov. 10 at 1 p.m. ET. Third-seeded Hofstra will meet No. 6 Delaware in Harrisonburg, Va., with the victor moving on to face No. 3 James Madison on Sunday at 3 p.m. ET.
The semifinal winners will meet on Saturday, Nov. 16, with the highest remaining seed hosting the match. All five matches will be available on FloSports, which is available on computers and on mobile devices as well as Roku, AppleTV, Amazon Fire and other OTT platforms.
