Brozoski's Record-Setting Day Sends Hofstra to CAA Quarterfinals

NEWARK, Del. (March 13, 2019) – Hofstra senior
Boogie Brozoski scored a Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Women’s Basketball Championship record 42 points to propel No. 9 Hofstra to a 77-75 win over No. 8 Elon in the opening round of the 2019 CAA Women’s Basketball Championship.
Hofstra (10-21) advances to Thursday’s Noon quarterfinal against top-seeded James Madison. Elon, the two-time defending CAA champion, closes its season with a 9-21 record.
Brozoski’s 42 points set a career-high, a Hofstra single-game record and a Bob Carpenter Center record on a day in which the senior eclipsed the 1,000-point mark for her career. Brozoski went 13-for-24 from the field, adding a perfect 12-of-12 effort at the free throw line.
Leading 76-69 with 57 seconds left in the fourth quarter, Hofstra would see Elon rally with six of the game’s next seven points in an 18-second span, closing within two points on Lexi Mercer’s 3-point play with 39 seconds to play.
After an errant Hofstra 3-pointer, Elon had the ball and a chance to tie or win the game. Jaylinn Powell’s attempt to tie with seven seconds left rattled out, and after an offensive rebound and timeout, Emily Maupin’s attempt at a game-winning 3-pointer hit the back of the rim as time expired.
Powell led Elon with 19 points as the Phoenix put four players into double figures.
Elon and Hofstra each had significant runs in the third quarter, as the Phoenix responded to a 7-0 Hofstra run with a 7-0 run of their own. Jaylin Powell hit back-to-back three-pointers to bring the Phoenix within four for the first time since 5:55 mark in the first quarter.
Hofstra shot 61.1 percent from the floor to in the first quarter, propelling them to a 26-15 lead following the first frame. Brozoski proved to be an early catalyst for the Pride scoring 10 points on 4-of-8 shooting.
Brozoski hit a three-pointer to cap a 10-5 run to put the Pride up by 16 to start the second quarter. Elon responded late in the second quarter as the Phoenix’ Ariel Colon led Elon on a 7-3 run to close the half down by seven.
