NEWARK, Del. (March 14, 2019) – JaKayla Brown
scored a career-high 17 points as Hofstra used a 21-6 third quarter to take control of the game and hang on for a 57-50 win over No. 1 James Madison in the quarterfinals of the 2019 CAA Women’s Basketball Championship.

No. 9 Hofstra (11-21) advances to the CAA semifinals for the first time since the 2015 CAA Championship, becoming the first lower seed to defeat a No. 1 seed in the CAA quarterfinals in the 36-year history of the championship. The Pride will meet either No. 4 Towson or No. 5 Delaware in Friday’s semifinal at 1 p.m. ET.
The win snapped Hofstra’s eight-game losing streak to James Madison (25-5).

The Pride’s Boogie Brozoski sealed the deal for Hofstra down the stretch, scoring 11 of her 14 points from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter. Brown scored 10 of her game-high 17 points in the third quarter, fueling Hofstra’s surge which saw it flip a 26-16 deficit into a 37-32 lead entering the fourth quarter.

James Madison would rally early in the fourth, taking a 42-39 lead on Logan Reynolds’ layup with 4:27 to play, but Hofstra would respond with baskets by Brown and Jaylen Hines to regain a one-point edge. After two Aneah Young free throws flipped the lead once more, Ana Hernandez Gil gave Hofstra the lead for good, draining a 3-pointer with 2:24 remaining.

James Madison had a 10-point lead after limiting Hofstra to just eight points in each of the first two quarters. Though the Dukes’ defense held Hofstra to just 27.3 shooting in the first half, James Madison was unable to get consistent production on the offensive end. The Dukes shot just 26.9 percent from the floor and were 2 -of-19 from 3-point range for the game.

The Dukes played almost the entire game without second team All-CAA selection Lexie Barrier, who was injured in the opening minute of the game. First team All-CAA guard Kamiah Smalls played just two minutes also due to injury.
