Northeastern Reaches CAA Semifinals for Second Time Behind Genco, Todd

NEWARK, Del. (March 14, 2019) –
Senior Jess Genco scored a team-high 22 points, leading three Huskies in double figures as No. 6 Northeastern defeated No. 3 UNCW, 75-64, in the 2019 CAA Women’s Basketball Championship quarterfinals.


 
Northeastern (20-10) reaches the semifinals of the CAA Championship for the first time since 2016 and just the second time in program history. The Huskies will face No. 2 Drexel in the 4 p.m. semifinal on Friday. UNCW falls to 18-12 with the loss.
 
Trailing early in the contest, Shannon Todd sparked Northeastern with 3-pointers on consecutive possessions, fueling a 13-2 Husky run to close the quarter and doubling up UNCW, 20-10. The lead would reach 13 at the half as Genco knocked down a 3-pointer just before the buzzer.
 

 
UNCW came out of the half on an 8-3 run to pull within eight, but never got closer as Northeastern spanned the end of the third and beginning of the fourth quarter on a 10-2 burst. Genco’s jumper with 8:02 to play gave Northeastern its largest lead of the game, 64-44.
 
Genco scored 11 of her 22 points in the fourth quarter, and finished 13-of-16 from the charity stripe.
 
Todd and Alexis Hill each finished with 16 points. Hill was 8-for-11 from the floor, while Todd shot 4-of-7 from beyond the arc.
 
Ahyiona Vason scored a career-high 24 points to lead UNCW.
