Record-Setting Second Quarter Sends Towson Into First CAA Championship Game

NEWARK, Del. (March 15, 2019) –
Towson scored a CAA Tournament record 29 points in the second quarter en route to a commanding 69-48 win over No. 9 Hofstra in the semifinals of the 2019 CAA Women’s Basketball Championship.
 
Towson (19-12) will make its first CAA Championship game appearance in program history and its first conference title game appearance since defeating Delaware to win the East Coast Conference Championship in 1984. The Tigers with face either No. 2 Drexel or No. 6 Northeastern on Saturday at 1 p.m. Hofstra’s closes its season with a 11-22 record.
   
Nukiya Mayo, who finished with 22 points on 8-of-11 shooting, scored eight consecutive points in the second quarter to spark a 22-0 run that gave the Tigers a 43-17 lead at the half. Amidst the offensive onslaught, Towson’s defense held Hofstra to just 13.3 percent shooting and allowed Hofstra to score just seven points in the second quarter.
 
 Towson finished shooting 52.1 percent from the floor while shooting 44.4 percent from beyond the arc. Towson capitalized on the defensive end as well, scoring 22 points off 20 Hofstra turnovers. Q. Murray chipped in 10 points for the Tigers.
 
Jaylen Hines led a Hofstra team that struggled on the offensive end. Hines finished with 17 points on 7-of-9 shooting, but the Pride as a whole shot just 27.4 percent for the game. Boogie Brozoski added 12 points for the Pride, averaging 22.7 points across Hofstra’s three games.
