Historic Northeastern Season Ends in WNIT
INDIANAPOLIS (March 21, 2019) – A 17-1 closing run in the second quarter sent Butler into the half with a 16-point halftime lead, and Northeastern could come no closer than that margin the remainder of the game as the Huskies fell, 89-72, in the first round of the WNIT at Hinkle Fieldhouse.
Making the program’s first trip to the WNIT, Northeastern (20-12) opened the game strong, using 10
Jess Genco points in the game’s first 10 minutes to open a 23-17 lead after one quarter.
Genco would finish her the night with 21 points, giving her 1,567 career points and third place in Northeastern history. The two-time All-CAA First Team honoree closed her career owning the Huskies’ program record for minutes (4,687), games started (122), assists (548), 3-point field goals (298) and 3-point field-goal attempts (851).
After an Ayanna Dublin jumper tied the game at 35 with 3:44 remaining in the second quarter, Butler (22-9) took control with its run. Whitney Jennings fueled the Bulldogs in the second, recording 14 of her game-high 29 points in the quarter.
Kristen Spolyar added 21 points for the Bulldogs, who will face Kent State in the WNIT 2
nd Round.
Northeastern’s 20-win season was the third in the program’s history.
