Northeastern Captures Sixth Consecutive Rowing Title

PENNSAUKEN, N.J. (May 19, 2019) – For the sixth consecutive season, the Northeastern women’s rowing team claimed the title at the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Rowing Championship at the Cooper River.
Northeastern captured the title with 26 team points, narrowly edging Drexel, who finished second with 24 points. Eastern Michigan placed third with 19 points. It was just the second time the Eagles have placed third at the CAA Championship in program history. Villanova and Delaware rounded out the five-team championship with 15 and six points, respectively.
Drexel captured its first-ever gold medal in the Varsity Eight with a time of 6:42.591, beating out perennial champion Northeastern by four seconds. Eastern Michigan took bronze in the event with a time of 6:55.316.
Northeastern took home gold in the Second Varsity Eight for sixth consecutive year, finishing with a time of 6:57.607. Eastern Michigan grabbed silver with a time of 6:59.236, and Villanova placed third with a time of 7:00.402.
Drexel became a repeat champion in the Varsity Four, taking home gold in 8:01.338. Northeastern grabbed silver with a time of 8:03.983 and Villanova took bronze with a time of 8:04.118.
Northeastern started the day taking the gold medal in the unscored third varsity eight race. The Huskies finished with a time of 7:14.088, and Villanova took home silver with a time of 7:22.736. Delaware finished third with a time of 7:25.693.
Drexel’s Paul Savell was named CAA Coach of the Year, marking the first time a Drexel coach has won the award. The Dragons came within two points of the CAA title, the closest the program has ever been.
Northeastern earns the CAA’s automatic bid to the 2019 NCAA Rowing Championship. The NCAA Rowing Selection Show will be held Tuesday, May 21 on NCAA.com.
