Northeastern Captures Fifth Straight CAA Men's Track & Field Championship

ELON, N.C. (May 4, 2019) -  Northeastern captured its fifth consecutive CAA Men’s Track and Field Championship on Saturday afternoon at the Jerry and Jeanne Robertson Track & Field Complex in Elon, N.C.

The Huskies finished the two-day event with 265 points and became the first team to win five straight conference titles since 2002 when UNCW completed a run of six in a row (1997-2002). William & Mary placed second with 219 points and UNCW was third with 145 points.



Northeastern sophomore Dametrius O’Connor was chosen as the Most Outstanding Track Performer of the Meet after sweeping the 100 and 200 meters as well being a member of the winning 4X100 relay team. William & Mary sophomore KJ Cook was selected as the Most Outstanding Field Performer of the Meet after taking first place in the hammer throw and discus.

Here’s a recap of Saturday’s events:

Men’s Shot Put:  William & Mary senior Preston Richardson claimed the shot put title by nearly four feet with a throw of 59-1.25 (18.01M). The Tribe took three of the top four places in the competition.

Men’s 3,000-Meter Steeplechase: Northeastern freshman Alexander Korczynski captured the 3,000-meter steeplechase in a time of 9:19.28. It’s the second consecutive year that a Huskies’ runner has taken the title in the event.

Men’s Discus:  William & Mary sophomore KJ Cook won his second gold medal of the meet by capturing the men’s discus with a throw of 178-8 (54.47m). The Tribe swept the top four spots in the event.

Men’s 4X100 Relay:  Northeastern raced home with 4X100 relay title for the fifth consecutive year in a time of 40.79. The Huskies team was Naukym Morton, Anthony Roderick, Dametrius O’Connor and David Adams.

Men’s 1,500 Meters:  William & Mary senior Ryan McGorty crossed the line first in the 1,500 meters with a time of 3:54.76. He’s the fourth different Tribe runner in the past five years to win the event.

Men’s 110-Meter High Hurdles:  UNCW senior Moe Holmes took first place in the 110 meter high hurdles with time of 14.34. He edged Wi E.J. Green by .06 seconds.

Men’s 400 Meters:  Northeastern freshman Phillips Magre crossed the line in 47.68 to win the title in the men’s 400 meters. It’s the fifth time in the past six years that a Huskies’ runner has taken first place in the event.

Men’s Triple Jump:  Northeastern senior Jordan Samuels earned his second straight CAA triple jump crown with a leap of 47-1.75 (14.37m). The Huskies took three of the top four spots in the event.

Decathlon: UNCW senior Nathan Rodgers won seven of the 10 events and compiled 6,231 points to post a convincing victory in the decathlon. He is the first Seahawk to win the competition since 2014.

Men’s 100 meters:  Northeastern sophomore Dametrius O’Connor took first place in the 100 meters with a time of 10.77. The Huskies took the top four positions in the race.

Men’s 800 Meters:  William & Mary sophomore Miles Owens earned a narrow victory in the 800 meters with a time of 1:52.51. He edged out NU’s Connor Donovan by 0.31 seconds.

Men’s 400 Meter Hurdles:  Northeastern junior David Adams captured his third consecutive title in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 51.94. He’s the first person to win the event in three straight years since 2000 and his time was the fastest since 2011.

Men’s 200 Meters: Northeastern sophomore Dametrius O’Connor won his second race of the day, taking first place in the 200 meters with a time of 21.59. It marks the fourth year in a row that an NU sprinter has finished first.

Men’s High Jump: UNCW senior Moe Holmes added a gold medal in the men’s high jump with a leap of 6-5.5 (1.97m). It was the third CAA high jump title of Holmes’ career, having also won in 2015 and 2017.

Men’s 5,000 Meters: William & Mary freshman Evan Goodell completed his sweep of the distance races with a victory in the men’s 5,000 meters. He crossed the line in 14:49.03 as the Tribe won the event for the fourth year in a row.

Men’s 4X400 Relay: William & Mary won the men’s 4X400 relay title for just the second time in school history. The team of Duncan Goodrich, Theo Chambers, Skander Ballard and Miles Owens finished in 3:13.67, which was the fastest effort in the event since 2012.
