Alexander Headlines All-CAA Softball Teams
RICHMOND, Va. (May 7, 2019) – James Madison junior Odicci Alexander was named the 2019 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Softball Player of the Year, the Conference announced Tuesday.
James Madison senior Megan Good received the honor of CAA Pitcher of the Year, while the Dukes’ head coach, Loren LaPorte, was named CAA Coach of the Year. Hofstra junior Kristin Hallam took home the title of CAA Defensive Player of the Year, while Elon’s Megan White and Hofstra’s Meghan Giordano were voted CAA co-Rookies of the Year.
The All-CAA teams and awards are determined by a vote by the league’s eight head coaches.
Alexander earns CAA Player of the Year honors for the second straight season and is the eight consecutive James Madison player to win the award. She is also just the second player to win the award in back-to-back seasons since JMU’s Jailyn Ford did so in 2015 and 2016. She was a dominant force in the circle and at the plate in 2019, finishing the season ranked second in the CAA with a 2.02 ERA and ninth in the CAA with a .354 batting average. She ranked tied for second in the league with 141 strikeouts.
Good collects her fourth CAA Pitcher of the Year honor following another superb season in the circle. She joins Hofstra’s Olivia Galati as the only player to win the award four times. Good posted a CAA-best 1.49 ERA this season and struck out 172 batters, moving her career total to 864. She moves ahead of former JMU ace Jailyn Ford into third place on the CAA all-time strikeouts list. Good has won 18 games this season and now has 117 for her career, the most of any active player in Division I.
Hofstra’s Kristin Hallam becomes the first Hofstra player to win CAA Defensive Player of the Year honors. The junior shortstop closed the regular season with a .964 fielding percentage, committing just seven errors on 196 attempts. She started in all of Hofstra’s 47 games and batted .358 with 54 hits. She also led the CAA with 33 stolen bases.
Elon’s Megan White and Hofstra’s Meghan Giordano were named CAA co-Rookies of the Year. White, a catcher, led Elon with a .337 batting average and totaled nine home runs on the season. She was also tied for the team lead with 26 RBI. White boasts a 1.000 fielding percentage, committing zero errors across 103 attempts.
Giordano, a third baseman, finished her season ranked sixth in the CAA with a .378 batting average. She was the top freshman hitter in the CAA totaling 54 hits, 53 RBI, 10 home runs, and 27 runs scored. She also posted a .949 fielding percentage at the hot corner, committing nine errors on 175 attempts.
James Madison head coach Loren LaPorte collects CAA Coach of the Year honors for the second consecutive season after taking over the team in 2018. LaPorte led the Dukes to a program-record 20 wins in CAA play and has James Madison on a 16-game win streak entering the CAA Tournament. The Dukes took home their sixth straight CAA regular season title and look to earn its seventh straight bid to the NCAA Tournament.
James Madison led all teams with five First Team All-CAA selections. Second baseman Madison Naujokas (.336 BA) as well as outfielders Kate Gordon (.436 BA) and Logan Newton (.442 BA) join the Dukes’ Alexander and Good on the team. Elon and Hofstra had two players earn First Team All-CAA honors. The Phoenix’s ace, Abby Barker (17-6, 2.67 ERA), joined White, while Hofstra’s utility player, Alexis Goeke (.275 BA), joined Giordano. Drexel’s power duo of Linda Rush (.443 BA, 20 HR) and Kristi DiMeo (.409 BA, 18 HR) were first team selections, and Towson’s Nicole Stockinger (.350 BA, 14 HR) rounded out the All-CAA First Team.
