RICHMOND, Va. (August 22, 2019) – James Madison University was voted to repeat as Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) men’s soccer champions, edging UNCW by a single point in voting of the conference’s nine head coaches.

James Madison, which will open the year ranked No. 17 in the United Soccer Coaches poll, saw Manuel Ferriol recognized as the CAA Preseason Midfielder of the Year and TJ Bush honored as the Preseason Goalkeeper of the Year.

UNCW’s Phillip Goodrum was voted the Preseason Offensive Player of the Year, while teammate Mark Lindstrom was tabbed the Preseason Defensive Player of the Year.

James Madison collected five first-place and four second-place votes to earn 61 points. UNCW, which is receiving votes in the United Soccer Coaches poll, was one point behind after receiving four first-place and five second-place votes. Hofstra (45) edged William & Mary (43) by two points to collect third, while fifth through eighth place in the poll were separated by just six points between Delaware (28), Elon (26), Northeastern (23) and Drexel (22). Charleston rounded out the poll with 16 points.

In 2018, Ferriol and Bush helped James Madison to the CAA regular-season and postseason titles before the Dukes embarked on a run to the NCAA Men’s Soccer Championship quarterfinals. The Dukes led the CAA with four honorees on the preseason team – Ferriol, Bush, Fernando Casero and Tom Judge. All four collected All-CAA accolades in 2018, with Casero and Bush earning first team nods. Bush turned in 13 shutouts in 2018, the second-most in a season in CAA history, while Casero helped anchor JMU’s midfield defense.

On Aug. 1, Ferriol was named a MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List candidate after a junior campaign in which he tallied nine goals and 23 points from the midfield.

Joining Ferriol on the Hermann Trophy Watch List was Goodrum, who earned All-Atlantic Region First Team honors in addition to being named the 2018 CAA Men’s Soccer Player of the Year. Goodrum’s 12 goals and 28 points paced the CAA, with the Charlotte, N.C.-product scoring two goals three times. Goodrum was joined on the preseason team by Lindstrom, who was a First Team All-CAA selection last season after helping lead the Seahawks to 10 shutouts in 20 matches.

Hofstra, which fell to James Madison in the CAA championship match, saw Matthew Vowinkel selected to the preseason team. Vowinkel paced the Pride with eight goals in his sophomore campaign, tying for fourth in the CAA. The Pride have qualified for the past seven CAA Men’s Soccer Championships under head coach Richard Nuttall.

William & Mary placed fourth in the poll and the Tribe will be looking for its fourth consecutive trip to the CAA Men’s Soccer Championship in 2019. The Tribe will look to replace the production of Antonio Bustamante and Ryder Bell, who combined for nine goals and 28 points last season.

Delaware will be led by reigning CAA Rookie of the Year and preseason All-CAA pick Timo Hummrich, who led the Blue Hens with four goals from the back line. Three of Hummrich’s four tallies proved to be game-winners as he started 16 matches as a freshman.

After earning First Team All-CAA accolades in 2018, Elon’s Luke Matthews collected preseason All-CAA honors. The senior defender started 14 matches for the Phoenix, recording three points.

Northeastern, picked seventh in the preseason poll, will be led by Ryan Massoud, who posted five goals and 11 points in his freshman season.

Drexel’s Chris Donovan and Charleston’s Tucker Heffron rounded out the preseason All-CAA team. Donovan was the Dragons’ third-leading scorer in his freshman season, notching three goals and nine points, while Heffron paced Charleston with six goals and 12 points.

The 2019 season kicks off on Friday, Aug. 30, with all nine CAA teams in action. The top six teams in the CAA standings will qualify for the 2019 CAA Men’s Soccer Championship, with the top two seeds hosting the quarterfinals and semifinals on Nov. 8-10. The highest remaining seed will host the championship on Saturday, Nov. 16.
